Thank you all so much for the unexpectedly high viewership!

To clarify a couple things:

I didn't go into too much detail on why Nintendo stopped using the MG20, since there's not a ton of info about it in the Gigaleak - all we have are technical files piecing together the development history of the console, without the context of the internal discussions that were going on at the time. It's possible that relations with Nvidia, power concerns, backwards compatibility concerns, or supply issues could have been the factors behind it.

It's not clear that the 3DS would have been more powerful with the Nvidia chip; the MG20 and the PICA200 were from around the same time, and there doesn't seem to have been a huge technical gap between them. This wouldn't have been anywhere near a Shield or Switch.

It’s so cool to see how Nvidia was working with Nintendo that far before the Switch!

Note that the PICA200 is just the GPU of the 3DS rather than the entire SoC. The SoC is still Sharp sourced and still has roots dating to the original GB (the original sound hardware exists soely for GBA HW emulation as well as other GBA, and DS/DSi components. I assume MG20 was dropped for compatibility reasons though the evidence of both hardware and software GBA emulators in the final 3DS is definitely suspicious.

Funny how the one time Nintendo actually went through with NVIDIA and used their Tegra chip, it actually has a big unpatchable vulnerability that costed them the switch's security :p

I think something happened during the DS (NVIDIA) that broke off their relation (or put it on pause) and 2006-2013 NVIDIA was working to improve and win Nintendo back.
My guess is that the chip was either too expensive or had too much power draw and NVIDIA took the off time to improve the chip for not only their own use, but to eventually return to Nintendo with something more custom tailored.

Thanks for making this. It's been over a decade since I saw that tech demo of the skeleton swinging a sword around.

If they had Nvidia tech in the 3ds, it would have made porting games to switch so easy. Bah

It's odd to see that Nintendo worked with Nvidia back in 2006 and decided a decade later to once again work with them. Plus with rumors surrounding the Switch 2 ramping up it looks like Nvidia once again is tasked with making the chip for the next Nintendo console.
