My grandma lived to 98 and always had super high cholesterol. Until her last few years, she always disposed of any medications her doctor gave her, including statins.

i grew up thinking healing came in a bottle. doctors, pills, routines. but deep down, something always felt off. like wed forgotten something older. something simpler. when i read the book called the hidden herbs by anette ray, it felt like being handed a map my ancestors had drawn. these werent just recipes. they were reminders of the way my grandmother used to treat burns with leaves, of the tea my mother made when i couldnt sleep. this book didnt just teach me about plants. it reconnected me to a part of myself i didnt know id lost.

I am a 59 year old female and eat a low carb, high saturated fat diet. My HDL stays in 70's, Tri- average 75, LDL over 250's; I have learned that statins raise LP(a) which I genetically have -higher. I used to be on a statin and all that time I was playing with LP(a) fire, not to mention other issues related to statins. My CAC in May was zero. It's a saturated fat ~ paradigm shift!

Telling doctors to think critically? You're funny, Nick. Over the last year I've been on a journey to help my wife because 8 different doctors were incapable of it. Methylation gene mutations are VERY common, yet they don't know or care about it. I'm a genetic engineer, so I understand genes and biochemistry, just as you do. Doctors are "done learning" and they, in general, do not want to learn anything else. Thinking critically means they have to "learn".<br><br>With methylation involved in literally everything in the body, I decided to ask my new endocrinologist (a PAC) how my MTHFR mutation impacts my insulin production and insulin resistance (insulin receptors) and he literally told me is doesn't matter. I could have explained to him what my skill set/knowledge is, and he would have completely ignored me, because he would think "I went through so many years of medical school, if what this one non-medical person tells me is true, then it means the medical educators don't know/understand what they are teaching about. That cannot be true."<br><br>The real problem is that doctors do not learn about genetics and biochemistry. And when you combine this with a "holier than thou" attitude that doctors are taught to have, you end up with ignorant pr1cks who refuse to learn or think critically who are incapable of actually improving your health. This is especially true when you consider they regularly overlook nutrition and just prescribe medication first. And sadly, you have to go to these people to get labs tests ordered or medication prescribed (for legit medical problems).<br><br>Just to be fair, I'm not going to demonize all doctors. There are some, usually functional/integrative trained, who are willing to think critically. And, for the most part, so, too, are naturopaths. Unfortunately, however, they are looked down upon by allopathic doctors and some health insurance companies, so it cam make it expensive to see them for help.

I love that: "The data doesn't care about your emotions" and I would add "beliefs". Great talk about about all the nuances. And by the way, Nick, I didn't get a chance yet to congratulate you on your MD. You are now a true Mud-Fud (MD/PhD). Yay. So cool. Welcome to the profession and keep on questioning and challenging; that is the only hope for our ossifying field. And your genuinely expressed humanity will keep you in balance with the scientific curiosity. Many MDs are being influenced by your efforts. You go man!

Was doing a calorie deficit of 2000 calories per day eating whatever and lost weight very slow. I switched to a very low carb diet and was eating well over 2500 calories per day. A lot of butter cheese olive oil and ghee and red meat. Weight went down very fast and didn't have cravings and mood was way better. Cholesterol went up a bit though.
