Phantasmagoria is an FMV-Horror Masterpiece (No, really!)

One of the really insidious things about Phantasmagoria is that you as the player can't really tell if this is supernatural or not, but even if it is the pattern of abuse so closely mirrors the way it works in real relationships that it almost doesn't matter. When Don regains control of himself and has a sudden bout of guilt, apologizing and then immediately returning to the abusive behavior - that is a CLASSIC part of the cycle of abuse. Being in Adrienne's head and seeing how she rationalizes and excuses his behavior, questions her own memory ... this is all incredibly accurate to how spousal abuse happens.

That bit at the end about the battle only starting when someone escapes their abuser hit home. I grew up with someone that had left their own abuser for over twenty years, and even with all the help they'd gotten I was still careful to never corner them or touch them when they had their back turned. These scars may scab over but they will last a lifetime

Ragnarox, the actor who plays Curtis in the phantasmagoria sequel has a youtube channel and does let's plays of thr series. He even did one with the lead of the first one. He also does interviews with people involved. It would be worth checking out for Sierra games, particularly if you do a vid on the sequel

Thank you for the nuanced and empathetic explanations on trauma from abuse. As a survivor I get exhausted by seeing people infantilize people stuck in toxic relationships; so I deeply appreciate that you not only kept the humanity of anyone in a hypothetical cycle of abuse and the one set forth in Phantasmagoria- but also put emphasis on the importance of a story like this and the way it was told and meant to be told. Roberta really knocked it out of the park. I’m glad her work is only getting more praise over time.

Phantasmagoria 2 video - yes please! I still remember having to travel to another country to buy it, because it was banned! And then I actually never finished it because I got stuck somewhere in the story. :face-blue-wide-eyes:

12:42 I remember the first 1 GB hard drive I bought. A cool $299 in 1995. An upgrade to my 400MB drive and I thought "If I live a million years, I'll never fill this up."

Today I've got a total of 2TB and I'm looking into buying another 2TB because I'm squeezed for space.

This is one of the few media that accurately captures such a harrowing scene and doesnt portray it as something to titilate. Its a horrific act of brutality, and it shows it as such.

When someone mentions FMV, my brain goes straight to Tim Curry and Command & Conquer. Phantasmagoria and the sequel are still amazing.
