  I spent my 20s and 30s thinking I was seriously unwell. It turns out I was just deeply experiencing the cognitive dissonance that comes from being force-fed an irrational worldview since birth, only to have to exist in a world that is in no way indicative of the veracity of that worldview.

  the ugliest, nastiest, slimiest call I've heard in a while. My entire family has mental conditions and seeing how religion affected myself and the people I love is exactly why I LEFT the church. I'd like to see how this caller feels about "how great religion is for mentally ill people" when his loved ones are shutting themselves in their rooms, refusing to speak or take any actual medication, because they're convinced that the church teaches that what they're doing is right. Or when his little siblings express a desire to die before their 8th birthday because that's when the religion says they don't automatically go to heaven anymore. Or when he is denied mental health care during the worst episode of his life because he should just pray harder instead. Disgusting.

  I have had mental illness my whole life. Religion is the absolute last thing I need to help manage my symptoms.

  When I was 11, I realized I was one of those people who just could not convince myself what EVERYBODY else said they believed. &nbsp;The pressure was traumatic. &nbsp; At 14, I refused to go to church which freaked out my Small-town Missouri mom. <br>I lived most of my adult life feeling guilty, ostracized, doubting my intellect and suffering through an entire society gaslighting me.<br>Christopher Hitchens fixed that. I owe him so much for that.
