  Dantes busting through Maximilien's window saying "HEY BUDDY MAKING GOOD CHOICES?!" gets even funnier when you know that it's more or less how that part plays out in the book.

  One thing I noticed about the video, you can tell by the hair when The Count goes back to being Edmond again for those brief moments - the slicked-back hair suddenly starts disheveling back to those young innocent curly locks when he speaks to Mercedes, because for that moment he drops everything and is back to being himself again.

  I love the energy of being stabbed to death, realizing the person taking your deathbed confession is that guy who got fucked twenty years ago who's clearly been weaving some massive conspiracy of his own, and going "That's so hilarious, God has to be real."

  Dantès's final confrontation with Villefort is darkly funny. He's all pysched up for the keystone of his vengeance, goes "I'm the Abbé Busoni... but also the Count... actually I'm Dantès and I AM VENGEANCE" and then Villefort shows him what happened to his son and he just deflates.

  The completely random lesbian musician who is a vocal point of like, a tertiary plot-arc of this book is like the cherry on top of a beautiful fucking sundae.

  &quot;I&apos;m gonna stay in Italy&quot;<br><br>Yeah, I would too. Almost blowing open a conspiracy involving someone more than willing to employ judicial corruption, extortion, kidnapping, and blatantly advocated for extreme and horrible tortures to your face MIGHT result in a minor case of brown trousers.<br><br>He didn&apos;t say shit because snitches get stitches, and in this case the stitches are being applied via rusty blunt needle in a dungeon by a hooded man with meathooks for hands.<br><br>Probably the most genre-aware horror(ish) character I&apos;ve ever seen.

  When Mercedes confront Edmond and he tells her &quot;you don&apos;t know how it feels like to have your life ruined and spend 20 years in hell&quot; and she hits him with the &quot;no but I know what it feels like to have the man I love threaten to kill my son&quot; this is SUCH a good book

  The best part is that Dantes is shown to be smart, not because his plans were flawless, but because when stuff came up he didn&apos;t expect he was really good at thinking on his feat and adapting to the situation like an actual smart person. They weren&apos;t always perfect, as evidenced by the dead child, but it actually does a good job of showing Dantes as a genuinely intelligent person and not just some wizard who is always right.<br>That&apos;s the difference between smart and dumb writing.

  I actually think that Franz has a much more interesting role then just being a temporary POV character. He is a tutorial and a cipher to the rest of the book. He shows you How Dantes operates, the ways in which he hides behind a series of masks, and the sorts of allies and tools he will use to target those who brought him down. In other words, he is here so that you have a reference so you can make sense of how, exactly, the rest of the plot is occurring , both in what you see and in what you don&apos;t see. Without Franz, it would probably be more difficult to properly appreciate the chaos of the rest of the story, as there wouldn&apos;t be a sort of guide as to how the count operates.

  I honestly kinda love the revisit to the Chateau d&apos;If after Dantes has his moment of &quot;wait... did I go too far?&quot;. Not only because of the reveal that the Chateau is now little more than a tourist attraction, emphasizing just how <i>fast</i> history moves and how quickly its atrocities are buried, but also because it&apos;s an inverse character growth moment, where most stories would have the character remember what mattered to them and come back from the darkness, Edmund Dantes stands in his old cell and remembers how these four walls were his entire world for 20 years, and the entire time he was in here his captors were off living their lives, enjoying incredibly luxury and wealth, and in the end he decides &quot;No, no I didn&apos;t go too far. They earned this.&quot;
