  I was the engineering manager for the Fairy Liquid plant at Thurrock and I can categorically say that Fairy Liquid contains no added salt. Mostly surfactants, industrial metholated spirits (for a nice shine on glasses), and some suds stabilisers. It’s pretty much exactly the same stuff (apart from colour and perfume) as the shampoo you use on your hair (and, probably, car). Fairy is just cheaper and stronger than car shampoos. It’s designed to dry naturally on your wine glasses.

  I worked in a factory that made washing up liquid and many other cleaning products and can say we use to add salt for viscosity to thicken the liquid, if it ever failed on viscosity we would add more salt and remix and retest. (Quality lab would give us the percentage or kilo weight figure to add in extra)<br>Lactic acid is also an ingredient that is added in washing up liquid and is very corrosive but cleans the dishes and kills bacteria. The floor was stripped of all the floor paint from drips and spillages if we ever filled containers of lactic acid. <br>I have seen comments about using hand soap as well, we also added salt to that to thicken it up.<br>Use a product designed for car cleaning, even a cheap one will be better.

  I work at a garage when i was a young man and had to clean RR Jag Range Rover I never used anything other the washing up liquid and Persil washing powder on the RR i was there 10 years theses cars still look amazing today

  As an industrial chemist, I can safely say there is little difference between washing up liquid and car shampoo, but the latter is much more expensive. The core cleaning ingredients are surfactants that break down grease and oil. Common types: anionic surfactants (e.g. sodium laureth sulfate), sometimes non-ionic surfactants for extra grease cutting. Car shampoo also has expensive foo foo dust.

  When I was a traditional window cleaner I used it every day on glass and it was amazing, also on frames as well obviously plastic
