Things went completely off the rails once you had people buying up homes for the sole purpose of renting them out as AirBnBs.

Airbnb was supposed to be a spare bedroom in someone's house. They treat you like a guest and it's cheaper than a hotel. It turned into a bunch of investors buying condos and running them like a hotel, charged the going hotel rate for the area, and they wanted the guest to do all the cleaning. So you ended up with a room that's just as expensive as a hotel but without the amenities AND they made you do the cleaning turnover of the room, which is ridiculous.

A couple years back, we had booked a weekend in a mid-level hotel. We arrived, checked in, and the room hadn't been cleaned. I went down to the desk to see if they could clean it. The night manager was there, and let me know it would be a while for someone to clean it, that all the other rooms except a suite upstairs were booked, and he'd see what he could do. He came up to the room, saw the state it was in, and called downstairs. He put our bags onto the cart and started pulling it, telling us to come with him. He put us in the suite, same charge as what we paid for the original room, and apologized profusely.

Needless to say, whenever we travel, we book with that hotel.

I've heard nothing but horror stories about AirBnB rentals.

Not to mention AirBnBs in residential neighborhoods where your neighbors never signed up for living next to a hotel.

Air b and b also took away ALL the affordable rentals in our town .. drove up housing prices, and now service, manufacturing and farm jobs can't be filled because no one can find a place to live here

Airbnbs needs to ban 'secret' house rules too. When booking, all house rules or instructions needs to be posted in a "house rules" section. Any addition to that should cause the booking to be fully refunded if the customer takes a picture of the rules and report it to Airbnb. The house belongs to their owners, they can make their own rules. Fine. But the rules should be fully transparent before booking.

My biggest issues is with homes that were purchased to be used as Airbnbs exclusively. There’s a housing shortage - no one should be allow to do that right now or ever due to downstream economic effects.

Airbnb was supposed to save us from hotels, not become worse than them. I haven’t stayed in one in years. They can fail. That’s fine.

Never used AirBNB and never will. I'm sticking with hotels instead of helping destroy the housing market.

The cleaning fee was supposed to be a way to protect owners from bad guests who left the home in a mess.

Owners however, figured they could just start charging ridiculous cleaning fees for no reason whatsoever, and AirBNB let them get away with it.

They deserve what they get.

It’s fine for hosts to expect guests to leave the place reasonably picked up and not trashed, but to leave a chore list and then charge a gigantic cleaning fee.
