!!!Totally forgot to mention this!!!

They're sold out. They're pretty much always sold out. He makes these in batches, and when they're gone, they're sold out for a few months at a time. IF you are interested in these, go get yourself on the wait list on his website:

www.waltersaudio.com

It doesn't cost anything to be put on that list, but you'll at least be one of the first to know when the next batch is ready. And then you've usually got around 24 hours before they sell out again. Really. They're that hard to get.

These are really good. Waiting for the stereo 19-inch rack version (which will emulate a different tape machine though or so I've heard).

Boosting the highs on the way to tape is not only a stylistic choice, it was also done to deal with tape hiss. When you have 44 tracks of tape (2 Studer with SMPTE on both), tape hiss starts to become noticeable. Boost the high on the way in and cut them on the way out, and you retain the high end of the recording while cutting down the tape hiss.

I have a pair too, they are awesome.
And wait until you dive into their “hidden” behavior.
Depending on what you feed them with, you can almost “isolate” the compression aspect of type without the distortion on some sources.
For that you need a specific de-emphasis curve. I made a plugin (wheelieplugins Patchbay) just so I could try to do that with the T805.
It’s a lot of fun.

P.S.: For tape “shrinking” the stereo image it could be mostly an EQ thing. Indeed tape tends to reduce the extra high-end which is quite often very present on the sides, and tends to have a resonant boost in the low-end which is usually where the kick and the bass lives => feeling of a louder center. All of that => feeling of quieter sides and louder center.

Note: these work best on the way in while tracking, OR, if your material is 88k or higher sample rate. Ultrasonic harmonics in the recordings have a big impact on how the circuit works.

The creator has talked about this.

I got two of them a month ago - now I run everything through them. I love them.

I’ve been using a pair of these for 5 months now and the magic hasn’t worn off. I started recording back in the late 70’s and worked with tape until the early 2000’s. This isn’t just close to tape, it responds like tape, saturates like tape, and especially glues like tape. Nothing I’ve found works like these units. 😊

I had the same reaction the first time I plugged in the pair I bought. I was running them on an acoustic guitar bus and my jaw dropped cause of the sound I was hearing. I couldn't believe it. It's been 3 months and I'm still in the honeymoon phase with em

I am one of those engineers who loves to boost the high eq going into tape because of how the tape responds. It smooths it out so much.
