As a black man, I find colorblind casting in historical roles insanely frustrating. It's not about denying opportunities to black actors; it's about respecting history. When a figure like Anne Boleyn, a very well-documented English noblewoman, is portrayed as a black woman...it breaks the story's authenticity. It feels less like representation and more like distortion. By that logic, it would be just as absurd to cast an asian man as Martin Luther King Jr. Some historical figures are tied to specific cultures, era and identities. Changing those details doesn't empower anyone, it just confuses the narrative and gives racist folks ammo.

Great video btw! Love Dr. Paul!!!

Fun fact about the white makeup: the makeup artist and makeup historian, Erin Parsons, did a fascinating video where they actually made the lead makeup, lead and all, and it was really rather beautiful. Sheer with an almost pearlescent glow. Not the white clown makeup most often portrayed

I remember there being a thing when the movie came out because there were two posters of the queens, one for Elizabeth said born to rule and the Mary one said born to fight, which is swapped. Mary was literally born to rule, she was queen before she turned a week old vs Elizabeth was fighting to stay alive from the moment her mother was executed up until she was crowned queen, and even after that too.

I wonder how much of her distress from killing a queen also went back to losing her mother, a fellow queen, in the same way. As cliche as it is maybe there was an element of “oh no I’m becoming my father” on it lol

One point on Mary and Elizabeth addressing each other as “sisters” in their correspondence:
It wasn’t just a psychological ploy each was using to encourage (or fake) closeness.

It was a convention up till modern times that all monarchs were in a metaphorical way brothers and sisters. So when monarchs wrote to one another (whether personal or business letters), they would start, “Madam My Sister” or “Sir My Brother.” If they were literally related, they would say, “Madam My Sister and Cousin” [or whatever]. (I’m quoting one of the Miss Manners books by Judith Martin.)

I get having creative "liberties" as someone who works in video making. But I love history and prefer it to be as accurate as possible, so I can appreciate beautifully shot scenes but will still be annoyed that cinematic themes are more important than what actually happened. Great breakdown, Dr. Paul!

Wonderful video! As was noted, it's a little strange to show Elizabeth aging but not Mary, who famously wore a wig to her execution, causing her severed head to fall to the floor when her executioner held it up by the wig. More substantively, I'm curious about the suggestions that Elizabeth knew enough of Darnley's bad character that she allowed him to travel to Scotland as a sort of trojan horse, to entrap Mary in a problematic if dynastically logical marriage. That possibility comes through more strongly in the 1970s movie, where Glenda Jackson's Elizabeth is clearly pulling all the strings to ensure Mary's downfall...

GOD, I love Dr. Paul!!! Always an instant click when I see history content with her in it. She's so fun to listen to, obviously she's extremely knowledgeable, and she is always so attentive to the whole context of what she's discussing or explaining. I always walk away having learned something or with a new perspective on a historical figure or event. Shout out to Dr. Paul. Long may she reign!

These TV series remind me why I prefer documentaries. I like historical accuracy. It would be cool to watch a series that is true to history down to the point of having the actors speaking in Scots. I prefer that form of art in film.

I enjoyed the movie but I felt bad that Elizabeth aged and Mary didn't. Also, I have always felt bad for Mary's ladies in waiting who were with her while she was imprisoned. Imagine that being your life. Your only fault was in who you were placed in service to. Thank you for a great insight of the movie and history!
