Setting someone up with Gloomhaven as a "gateway game" is a perfect way to make sure they never want to play boardgames again.

I run a game store, and this aligns with many of our best sellers. The first thing we ask customers is how many players, and the most common response is along the lines of "works well with 2 but can play with more".

However we ask about whom they will play with, as we know the person buying will like it but it's likely the person(s) they will play with probably won't.

I don't have the Charisma score to convince a family of non-nerds to play Blood on the Clocktower.

Heat, my beloved.

Also Root is definetly thr biggest Bait of all the games you showed. All the other games come in huge boxes with aggressive artstyles, while root comes in a mediums sized box that says "friendly adventure" to the unsuscpecting eye.

Now Root is one of my favorites, but I definitely wasn't ready the first time I joined the hobby. I was lucky I got Ticket to Ride that day instead.

Can confirm Root’s placement. I got it and an expansion for game night without fully knowing what it was. 5 hardcore gamers spent nearly 3 hours passing around rulebooks and letting one player get ahead because we missed a rule of their faction. Super fun! But not for a large group of beginners.

Spot on again as usual. Perhaps there’s a follow up video on “the set of entry level games to play to learn all the main board game mechanics”. Auctions, drafting, resource management, bluffing, probabilities, limited communication, deck building, rondels, press your luck, etc.

In my opinion this list NEEDS Carcassonne. Carcassonne is such an amazing game, it's easy to learn, easy to teach, easily modular (if you have the big box or expansions), definitely my favorite game to play with people who doesn't play board games. Besides that I would also add Love Letter.

And definitely kick Catan out. It's Monopoly with extra steps.

I'm surprised Splendor and Splendor Duel aren't in the flowchart for 3-4 players and 2 players respectively.
Century: Golem Edition is also a good pick for 3-5 players.
Sushi Go Party, Bang!: The Dice Game, and Incan Gold are all easy to learn, fast, and support up to 8 players.
One day I'd like to play Imhotep (which also has a Duel version).
If more people knew about BGG's "Advanced Search" feature we'd never need this video.
