Wow whoever this “notinthecast” person is they must be really good at cosplay to win all these contests and in so many fields too.

dude I cracked it. they just made cosplay dance moms. new competition every week, manufactured drama between solo performers, production disturbing the actual competition process behind the scenes.

My step mom was apart of the doctor who cosplayers from Kansas City, and she has talked about how it ruined cosplay for her until she met my dad . All of the doctor who cosplays were hand sewn by her and she now just keeps them all in a tote in the basement.

I met Yaya at a con years ago, I had lined up to take a photo with her bc we were both dressed as Super Sonico. She pulled me up to the front of the line when she saw my cosplay and was so sweet to me about my costume. She and her friend took a photo with me and they were both so kind. I have always been very plus sized and was very self conscious about cosplaying around that time, but that interaction meant a lot to me and I’ll always be grateful to her for that moment.

    April, Carl's sister here.
Great analysis. Always love seeing how people interpret what was shown on screen vs what actually happened behind the scenes.

Yaya talking about her SA is so helpful to hear from someone who has been harassed in cosplay. Even being such a "famous" cosplayer this stuff happens. Her advocating to protect younger women who have less security/safety is really important.

For the life of me I don’t know why they didn’t set this up like project runway, forged in fire, and Blown Away. It should have been a competition that just focused on craftsmanship in the many areas that cosplay needs cosplayers to use.

Hi, I'm Rynn, one of the judges from ep 4 (thank you for the credential clarification btw - I swear I am a very experienced judge, I'm just 100 years old 😂)

I gotta say - I don't look back on the HOC experience in a negative way. It just felt like an amusing fever dream. The judges and I weren't associated with the show (we were contracted by the con) and were just pulled in last minute, so we were able to witness the production craziness without getting in too deep.

A stand out memory for me is when the production team tried to get us to record generic statements about the contestants - "wow they look great", etc. We knew they would be edited inappropriately/manipulated later so we refused to do it. Instead, we gave highly specific commentary that could only be associated with that cosplayer, like "Wow Monika's chiffon really flows nicely on stage". Unsurprisingly, none of it was ever used, but it felt like a nice little defiance.

Another key memory: the production team really tried to coach me to judge the Fushigi Yuugi costumes harshly, because those were the same costumes my partner and I made for WCS 2010. (I think that's why they gave me the WCS title, even though I wasn't representing WCS in that particular contest). They'd say things like "you know this costume inside and out, they should feel that pressure." Obviously, I did not do this. However, I can absolutely vouch for the production tactics Yaya alluded to in her interview, and can't imagine the pressure she felt.

That's the thing...ultimately, I was under no obligation to listen to anything they said, so I can look back without regrets and just think, "huh, so that's how they make a reality show - crazy!" However, I've swapped stories with the cast members over the years and know their experiences were much different and come with complex emotions. Despite good intentions, they went through a lot (both during and after filming) so I have a lot of respect for every one of them. Many are still cosplaying today and have made a significant, positive impact on the community (regardless of follower count) and HOC was but a weird blip in that legacy.

One last sidebar: HOC was how my coworkers finally learned about my secret cosplay life. The day after it aired, my coworker slowly approached me and said "so...weird question but...were you on SyFy last night?" and then the secret was out. I had been too scared to tell my work about cosplay because I didn't want them to think of me differently or judge me, but everyone was so kind; it changed how I talked about cosplay moving forward. So at least one good thing came from it. ❤
