Completely regardelss of everything else, creating a fictional sequal to an actual memoir is pretty crass even if you stick super close to the original

Its kind of an American tradition to wildly misread an anti war piece of art and then keep going and make it pro war.

Can't believe this video made go through
"man, Jarhead 2 sounds really disrespectful to Swofford's lived real-war experience"
to "man, Jarhead 2 sounds like a cinematic masterpiece next to Jarhead 4"
to "man, pour one out for the Bulgarian homies that lost their Jarhead 4 jobs"

my cousin was blown up in afghanistan by what i was told was an accidental missile strike, not meant for the canadians it hit. at the time i was a teenager, and dan was an employee at a place i spent a lot of time at. i remember he was compassionate when he learned my cousin died and I remember that to this day.

now, I'm 12 years older than my cousin was when he died; when i was 15 i thought about how he would never marry or have kids or come back from that place. now, in my thirties, i wonder about the things dan talks about in this video. did my cousin, a 21 year old kid — i remember being 21, and now at 33 my big cousin is a kid to mw that way — did he deal with this? was he trained for combat, prepared to kill someone who he thought was trying to kill him? what did he do out there? how did it feel, being prepared to take life only to be out there doing nothing all that much? and dying, in the service of doing nothing much at all. just trading smokes with the locals and drinking with his coworkers and calling his mom and dad half a world away. he didnt die for freedom; the taliban seized control of afghanistan 13 years after my cousin died out there. Canadians were never in danger, and it's obvious now that their military presence did nothing permanent or notable, in the grand scheme of things. maybe he helped the kids and locals he met out there, or maybe he just stood around with a gun, waiting for a reason to shoot one of them. i dont know which is worse, dying out there or coming back a jarhead like that.

i always think of the line from Dan's "NostalgiaCritic's The Wall" video; Soldiers sent to war don't die for their country. They just die. Its so painfully true in a myriad of ways. Being in my thirties and knowing that my cousin, 21 years old and full of endless potential, died for nothing and was trained to be and do nothing, makes his death that much more tragic. makes all that trauma so much more tragic. the idea of honour in military service really is a lie we tell ourselves to feel better about all the pain it causes.

idk I don't know what my point with this comment was but this video just intersects with my life a lot and i had to say something about it

"It's not our place to question whether we're on the right side." is really telling on yourself. That's literally the banality of evil thing. But it speaks volumes about the writers incurious worldview that they're unaware of one of the most important ideas to come out of the horrors of the 20th century.

"He seems like a Jarhead 2 kind of guy" is such a great and scathing insult

I mean, yes, as a military veteran, I can confirm that they use cult tactics in basic training.

"Jarheads are always buried face down, so even in death their spirit can watch the bottom flank of their living brothers oorah oorah oorah."

I've been thinking about that Wilhelm scream for days and I think I've decided that it's actually the one glimmer of hope in this whole mess. Because that wasn't a corporate decision, that was one sound editor deciding it was funny to slip an industry in joke into their project. No matter how much corporate overlords try to sand off every non-standard element from their product, on the smaller levels there are still human artisans who want to make something they care about. Until AI replaces them.
