Very cool comparison. Ill be sticking with the 300 win mag just because it does a great job at 90% of the 338 and costs 1/2 the money. Im sure the rifle is half the price too.

The .300 Win Mag has a sectional density of .286 and the .338 Lapua has a sectional density of .312. The .300 Win Mag has about 92% of the sectional density of the .338 Lapua and penetrated about 90% of the .338 Lapua.

Don't worry about the stationary jaw. Put a thick piece of rubber on the traveling jaw and clamp against the sled. 40 to 60 durometer should be good. It won't last forever, but the shock absorbency of the rubber will extend the life of the vise.

Penetration is more due to bullet construction. An all copper hunting bullet in either caliber may penetrate the 5/8th plate. The movement of the plate for the last two shots is also a factor that does not help penetration. Interesting test.

RUAG makes a Tungsten cored 338 Lapua, theyre over $18 a shot, but would be great to test or to pull the projectiles to make crazy magnum AP rounds.

I usually used a 30-06 (cheaper and more options) for elk hunting but did use a 300 Win Mag a few times. Its a beast.
