Lake Mead Water Crisis: Why Lake Powell Can't Save It

Protecting Lake Powell helps preserve Glen Canyon Dam’s ability to release water and generate power—but reducing releases downstream places more pressure on Lake Mead.

How should water managers balance those risks? Should protecting critical infrastructure at Lake Powell take priority, or should more water continue downstream to Lake Mead?

I’d genuinely like to hear how you would approach a system where helping one reservoir can make the problem worse somewhere else.

Something about cities and gardens and Orchards in the middle of the desert, I don’t know. What could go wrong?

They could totally drain both Flaming Gorge and Powell, and it would hardly fill Mead enough. Hope the super El Nino prediction comes true.

The Glen Canyon dam can only release limited amounts of water experts say you have to blow up these cement plugs at the bottom but at this point this dam and lake becomes worthless...

It's about time the states that use it realise - it no longer sustainable and certainly not feasible for the future. All that farming has to move to well watered areas which have a lot of rainfall in the USA

What happens with all the water used to generate electricity? Where does it go? Is it used for other purposes, or what, or just wasted?

you had 20 years to plan something but you just had to keep kicking the can down the road...They better start desalination of water from the Gulf and the Pacific ocean, and do it rapidly! This needs to be done on a nationwide level as well! About 71 percent of the Earth's surface is water-covered, and the oceans hold about 96.5 percent of all Earth's water. Water also exists in the air as water vapor, in rivers and lakes, in icecaps and glaciers.
