Some videos on George Perez or John Byrne would be interesting.

Great vid as always! My next choice of artist would be Alan Davis. Especially his FANTASTIC FOUR: THE END and KILLRAVEN period. Some of my favorite comic art ever.

i'm just glad we live in a time where we get to see jim draw. one of the fundamental but oft overlooked rules of comics is to 'make it uckingfay awesome'.

The way Jim and Scott render chrome/shiny metal STILL crops up in my art, 30+ years later. I'll use it for especially reflective stuff, like my monster-hunting kobold's silver daggers, and to a lesser degree sword blades in general.
Rim lighting is very handy for avoiding tangents, which I find myself constantly struggling with when doing the tiger stripes on my catfolk barbarian (she probably needs to wear more clothes, but I was going for a Conan vibe when I designed her) and I need to start using it more often. I like how Jim uses it on areas not on the edge of a character, like in the Wolverine example you showed, to make the contours of the muscles pop and help the characters stand out a bit.

As for artists to do a deep dive on, I've (not surprisingly) always loved John Buscema's work on the Savage Sword of Conan comics Marvel put out in the 70s, and he did a stunning amount of work in superhero comics as well. People always compare his art to Jack Kirby but honestly I don't see it in his Conan stuff.

Another Artist that would be cool to see you breakdown would be Marc Silvestri w/ Dan Green inks. The Uncanny X-Men years would be awesome. Loving these breakdowns!

Totally makes sense the way the rendering goes for female and male idealized superhero figures: the female idealized figure (strong but maintaining femininity) would hold a tiny bit more accumulation of adipose tissue around the triceps and hamstrings, thus slightly less deep cuts/shadows to split up muscle groups.

Great video!!

Yes! Another Pancake Jim Lee clip. I can't tell you how much I love these breakdowns and how much nostalgic joy I get from seeing these comics again. You also help me appreciate them on a whole new level. While Lee and Williams are almost a brand themselves I want to give a shoutout to Joe Rosas who did the colour work. This was at a time when the colourists were pushing the 4 colour process to its limits and just before digital colour became a thing (and was used at Image in the early days to try and hide a lot of substandard art...) When I look at some of the colour choices here like mixes light, desaturated yellow and blue on a face along with shadows and hatching to indicate darkness, I understand why these were the first comics to feel like big budget movies.

As for another artist to study, I think the best artist to come out of the early years of Image was J Scott Campbell - particularly his later work on Gen13 and all of Danger Girl. He mixed the Jim Lee, Art Adams, Mike Golden influences with Disney Princesses, MAD magazine caricatures, Gil Elvgren good girl art (so his characters were more winking cheesecake than pr0n) and he never skimped on backgrounds or rendering vehicles, tech and weapons. He's known for his covers but Danger Girl is an underrated book which is way smarter and self aware than a lot of people think.

I'd love to see a spotlight on Arthur Adams. He has enough quirks of style to fill an episode, and then some.
