  So, there's nothing dangerous about hard tack at all.  Scurvy isn't caused by what you eat, it's caused by what you don't eat.

  There is a lot of debate about how dangerous sassafras actually is, with it mostly being considered safe for human consumption in moderation. The levels that had to be used to produce cancer in animal studies were levels that would be near impossible for humans to consume for periods long enough to produce cancer. Basically you would have to eat/drink it constantly for extended periods of time for there to be any real danger of it causing issues. The reason it was banned was mostly the drug war and the fact it can be a precursor to illicit drugs.

  This is a horror story. I’ve never been a fan of oysters and the warning on local menus always made me wonder how one person can be disgusted by the smell,texture and taste of something while another found it so pleasing it was worth risking their lives.

  This was fascinating. But, obviously, the consumption of these foods didn't end in a majority of fatalities. Or people would've immediately stopped eating these foods, and there'd be a record of mass deaths amoung the royal courts after meals and banquets. Instead, something like eel pie was gifted to royalty for over a century. It is likely most people's bodies over the centuries had adapted to nullify the hidden dangers. Except for the vulnerable few.

  Now think about India and Africa today, where cows and pigs roam around eating all the garbage that is dumped around everywhere.    The modern world...... yikes.

  The problem is these food were not cooked properly. Also, you harvest food like swans and lamprey&apos;s from contaminated water, YEAH!! Saloop like tomatoes were mistaken as being poison. Also Saloop was used to treat VD and it was stigmatized in the 19th century. So it was gone for that reason.
