I have a 75 with six 2yo angels. They are definitely my favorite fish I've ever kept.

I love my polor blue chiclids/parrots. Whatever people want to call them. The beauty and compact size of the the convict without all the aggression.

Kept many of these, but one I have now in my mixed South American tank that is smaller, peaceful and beautiful are rams. I would stay away from German Blues as a beginner but Honduran or Bolivian…awesome

I’ve kept cichlids since I was a boy and fell in love with green terrors since I first laid eyes on them. All the ones I’ve had have always been super enjoyable to keep, they’ll flare at you, shake their head, chase you through the glass, circle around your arms in the water, let you know when they’re hungry(all the time), they’re just as personable as oscars but in a more aggressive way. The blueish green sheen on the sides of a beautiful green terror just can’t be beat. What I do to help cichlids grow faster is feeding them a good quality variety of food, clean water at 80-82 degrees, and I usually keep them by themselves or with just a few small dither fish so there’s less stress.

A cool set up for my future would be a 125 or larger with a pair or a few pairs of fire mouth cichlids (species meeki) with a group of larger livebearers such as swordtails, and plenty of rocks and maybe plastic plants. I had a breeding pair of firemouths alone in a smaller tank back in 1990.

PODCAST IDEA!!!

Jason and John, I had a bad experience that killed 13 fish I had just purchased. I’d love for you to verify my theory as to why this happened and please share this with your audience.

I got an entire tank set up from a hobbyist that was moving that included the fish. These were mature peacocks and haps. I used this awesome clear live bait carrying set up with a bubbler for transport. Here’s where I think I went wrong. The seller insisted we use tank water which I never have done. I always use fresh water with chlorine remover. Within 20 minutes I had fish starting to gasp. 3 minutes later they were flipping over. I lost 13/16 fish. I think what happened was when the bubbler created surface agitation in the tank water it instantly released ammonia into the water killing my fish. If I had just used a bucket with a lid and no bubbler they probably would have made it. I also could have added some seachem prime or similar product to help but idk if that would have handled it. Please let me know what you think happened. Thanks

I’d also suggest Keyhole, Festivum and Julidochromis as pretty peaceful and relatively easy cichlids.
