The UK average works out at £41.45 a year, the highest single-bin charge found was £136.70, and forty-six councils charge nothing at all. In Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland it is free for everybody.<br><br>Cashback with no purchase: the requirement to buy something first was removed by the Financial Services Act 2021.<br><br>Hospital parking: abolished in Wales in 2008 and in Scotland in 2009. In England, four groups must be given free parking — blue badge holders, parents staying overnight with a child, frequent outpatients with a long-term condition, and staff on night shifts. The licence is £180 a year from 1 April 2026.<br><br>Pension Credit: it tops up your weekly income and it carries the free licence, help with dental costs and help with rent and council tax. Hundreds of thousands of households who qualify have never claimed. The check is free and takes about ten minutes, and Age UK will do it with you.<br><br>Figures were checked in September 2026 and some of them will move.
