Sevilla vs Real Betis: El Gran Derbi's Real History

Sevilla vs Real Betis divides one city between the establishment club and the people's club. Sevilla FC, founded in 1890, grew up tied to Seville's middle class and British merchants. Real Betis, formed after a breakaway a few years later, became the club of the working class. They have shared one city, and disliked each other, ever since. This is El Gran Derbi. Real Betis, which took its modern name in 1914, became the club of the working class. • Real Betis were born from a breakaway: after an internal split at Sevilla FC, a new club formed and later merged into Real Betis Balompié, taking royal patronage from King Alfonso XIII. • The first Seville derby was played on 8 October 1915, a 4–3 Sevilla win. The clubs first met competitively in the 1928 Copa del Rey. • Both clubs have won La Liga exactly once: Betis in 1935, Sevilla in 1946. • Sevilla are the record holders in the Europa League, with seven titles and a perfect record in its finals. Real Betis have won the Copa del Rey three times, most recently in 2022, when they knocked Sevilla out along the way. • In 2007 a Copa del Rey derby was abandoned after Sevilla manager Juande Ramos was knocked unconscious by a bottle thrown from the crowd. It was finished weeks later behind closed doors. • Sevilla lead the all-time derby with 66 wins to Betis's 42, and 36 draws, from 144 meetings. • Real Betis reached the first European final in their history in 2025, the Conference League, losing to Chelsea. The Seville derby is a class divide as much as a football rivalry. Sevilla FC came up as the club of the city's establishment, its merchants and professionals, and settled in the well-off Nervión district. Real Betis drew the working class of Seville and turned being the underdog into an identity. Their supporters still sing that they will love Betis even when it loses. Success has rarely been shared. Betis won the only league title of their history in 1935. Sevilla answered with theirs in 1946, then built the stronger modern record, winning the Europa League seven times. Betis have had their own reply in the cups and, in 2025, a first European final. The two meet twice a season in La Liga, and the city stops each time.
