PSG vs Marseille: Le Classique

PSG vs Marseille is the biggest rivalry in French football, and one of the youngest. Marseille have existed since 1899. Paris Saint-Germain were only founded in 1970, and the rivalry between them was pushed hard by television in the 1990s. It has since become the fiercest fixture in France. This is Le Classique. Paris Saint-Germain were created only in 1970, from a merger of two Paris sides. • The rivalry is as much north against south as club against club: the capital, Paris, against Marseille, the working-class Mediterranean port. • Le Classique was pushed hard by television in the early 1990s, when Canal+ owned PSG and marketed the fixture to build a national rivalry. • Marseille were the first French club to win the European Cup, beating AC Milan 1–0 in the 1993 final through a Basile Boli header. • In 1994 Marseille were stripped of their 1992–93 league title and relegated over a match-fixing scandal, though they kept the Champions League. • A Qatari takeover in 2011 turned PSG into France's dominant club, and they have since won Ligue 1 fourteen times, twelve of them since the takeover. • A 2020 Classique produced five red cards, and Marseille's 1–0 win was their first over PSG in nine years. • PSG won their first Champions League in 2025, beating Inter 5–0, the biggest winning margin in a final. They retained the trophy in 2026, beating Arsenal. Le Classique is France's biggest match, and one of its strangest. Most great derbies grew out of a shared city; this one pits the capital against the country's second city, some 400 miles apart. It was sharpened deliberately in the 1990s, when Canal+ owned PSG and had every reason to sell a rivalry to its subscribers. The hatred, though, turned out to be real. For a long time Marseille held the one trophy Paris could not buy. Their 1993 European Cup made them the only French club to win it. A match-fixing scandal soon cost them their league title and their place in the top flight. PSG chased that same crown through a decade of Qatari spending on Neymar, Mbappé and Messi. They finally won it in 2025, without a single superstar name. France now has two European champions, and they cannot stand each other. For the story behind the story rather than the highlights, the same treatment runs through "Celtic vs Rangers: The Old Firm Derby", "The Milan Derby: AC Milan vs Inter Milan" and "Sevilla vs Real Betis: El Gran Derbi". --- FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Why are PSG and Marseille rivals?
