  The “they should be grateful for whatever they get” attitude is pernicious. When I ran a food pantry, I fired volunteers on the regular when they expressed that attitude. One year, one of them refused to clean out the decaying fruit and said, “if they’re really hungry, they’ll eat it.” &nbsp;I’m sorry, what? The attitude that hungry people should eat rotting fruit is awful. And then she couldn’t believe it when I “fired” her - like I should also be happy for what I get, because she’s volunteering her time. Sorry, lady, but I don’t need your toxicity here.

  My brother and I had two experiences with Angel Tree (or similar type of charity). One year, when we were both young and still believed in Santa, whoever picked our tag off of the tree phoned it in. That was the year I stopped believing Santa was real. Why would Santa treat some children better than others, when my brother and I had been so good? We had been living in a homeless shelter that year with our mother, we had been hungry at times, we had run from abuse, and I remember her face when I told her I knew Santa wasn&apos;t real. It was the dying breath of my childhood, in that bleak setting. I was 7. The second time around, I was 15. I told my mom not to put a tag on the tree for me, just for my brother, who was still young enough to believe in Santa. I&apos;m not sure if the charity was AT or not, because the woman who grabbed my brother&apos;s tag had my mom&apos;s contact info. She called my mom as soon as she saw my brother&apos;s list. She wanted to be sure she and her friend got all the kids from our family. My mom said &quot;oh, I have a daughter, too. But she didn&apos;t want to participate, so she doesn&apos;t have a list.&quot; The lady said (in a much sweeter way, I&apos;m sure) that she didn&apos;t care, that she wanted to get gifts for me too. I was stunned. I didn&apos;t know what to ask for! I awkwardly fumbled around and said something along the lines of &quot;cool clothes? Kids at school bully me for my Goodwill clothes&quot;. This woman and her friend went HAM! My brother got the video games he wanted, so he was overjoyed. This woman begged my mom to be there the day we opened our gifts. Again, not sure that&apos;s AT. My mom was wary, but agreed when the woman stressed she wanted to know if the clothes fit me, so she could exchange anything that didn&apos;t for the right sizes. This woman and her friend came by, sat on the couch, I put on a &quot;fashion show&quot; while they hyped me up. I felt so cool and so pretty. Everything but one pair of pants fit. And yes, they exchanged them almost immediately for the proper size. Those clothes transformed me. I felt so good about myself. I didn&apos;t even care if the other kids thought I was cool or not, because what did they know? Two cool 20-somethings shopped for me. I had my own stylists. It changed me. Yes, the silly teen girl confidence boost of a new wardrobe, but also just the idea that these two women, who hadn&apos;t known me and weren&apos;t related to me were in my corner. They both sobbed after the fashion show. They both said they&apos;d been bullied, too. They grew up poor. They understood. I kept those clothes long past when they stopped fitting me. I think about those women a lot, and what motives people have for giving. You can say they got accolades because they were present when we opened the gifts. Having been there, and having worked in the nonprofit sector and seen many people give their time, talent, or treasure with different degrees of selflessness, I genuinely believe these two women just wanted to pay something forward to a younger version of themselves. To be clear, they set my brother up, too. Above and beyond what they needed to. I&apos;m not here to tell you that charity isn&apos;t worth it unless you go all out. Not at all! But there are kids on the other end of these donations. And you would not believe how impactful these things can be to young minds. For all I know, they bought everything from Walmart! But they thought of me, and the impact of the gift. About who I was. The world felt a little less cruel. This is rambling, but my point is, don&apos;t just &quot;call it a day&quot;. 7 year old me deserved to believe the world had some good in it. I&apos;m 34 now, and thankful I saw 16, because a stranger gave me hope that not every day would be miserable.
