Part 3 of the west-to-east Cape York run, and the boys have saved the Old Tele for last. Palm Creek greets you five minutes in, steeper and deeper than Shaun Whale has ever seen it. Sooty goes first, then Tim, Tony, Pete and Az, and getting back to level ground takes a rock step, an undercut bank and a rear bar with three winch points — four tonne either side, eight in the middle. Three alternators drop out in a day; one gets swapped and still won't charge until a bush fix runs power from the alternator to the start battery on a spare earth cable and cable ties. Az's 79 Series pretzels a tail shaft and starts dropping diff oil out of the rear pinion seal, leaving him in two-wheel drive halfway up the Cape. A replacement gets run down the track overnight by a couple of local legends, just in time for Graham Cahill's birthday. Day two is the big one. Bertie Creek, then the drop 80 people have parked up to watch, with a motorbike launching clean over the top of Sooty while the 80 Series sits in the creek bed. After that: Fruit Bat Falls, crazy shirt night and pizzas cooked on the coals under a camp oven, then the northern half — Cannibal Creek, the Cypress Creek log bridge with half its ratchet straps hanging broken underneath, Logans Creek gone to grout, and finally the crossing that's claimed more 4WDs than any other in the country, 120 people watching from the bank.
