What Krakauer, and others have failed to appreciate, is that Boukreev was so poor that he had to learn to climb without oxygen. No one in his circle could afford expensive gear, including bottled oxygen.

He was the man with an empty wallet but a rich inner world. One of those who lived his simple and heroic life doing what he believed he had to do.

Jon Krakauer slandered Boukreev horribly in his bestselling book "Into Thin Air". He's edited & revised the book multiple times since, but i read it when it came out & it was shameful.

He placed his own safety at risk to rescue others and people want to say that he should have done more, simply inconceivable.

I was at the base of annapurna 1 south face last year. The south face is a terrifying vertical beast of a mountain face 1000s of metres high. I remember thinking only mad men would climb this....

Anatoli’s girlfriend stated that he would have reoccurring nightmares about dying in an avalanche on a mountain. But of course he couldn’t give up the climb because he absolutely loved climbing mountains more than anything.

He can be both a hero and a contributing culprit. Kinda like being the reason for a car crash, and then being a hero for rescuing those in the car crash. He can be both.
