loop engineering sounds like a way to burn more tokens for the frontier labs

I love your videos. Amongst many concerns I'd like to highlight one important I can think of as watching you. Human tend to forget how things work they don't use regularly. As you said "as we increase the number of generated code, the less effective the code review becomes", thus less ownership, less understanding. And in the long run, people will simply start forgetting how to write good code.

I've been a software developer for 40+ years, and this matches my experience. I guess if you separate coding from architecture and design, then yes, AI agents do a good job of writing code. I've learned a lot by seeing what they produce. But big-picture, if you're trusting AI to create a complicated system from scratch, you're going to get burned.

AI kind of reminds me of watching a new construction home being built. The initial framing takes place in a couple of weeks, and you think, “Wow, at this rate, the house will be done in a few months.” But then it drags on for months as the different trades come through to do electrical, plumbing, tile, and everything else. Suddenly, it has taken close to a year to finish.

I'm working on a couple of greenfield apps and made huge progress in the first few weeks standing up a basic version. It's now six months later, and I'm still putting the finishing touches on them because the difference between a basic application and a polished, user-friendly one is a million little details that no AI agent can anticipate or be aware of, because they're not users.

The strong push of loop engineering from frontier model providers gives the impression that they are struggling with coming up with new things that will keep the momentum high, especially wrt their upcoming IPOs.

Problem is people who never wrote a line of code are making decisions

Totally agree. Most of the work isn't generating code, but integrating it with existing systems and business logic. 'Coding is solved' if you ignore all the hard parts.

I have been a software engineer for 16 years. When I heard about "loop engineering", I seriously considered switching careers. Like, seriously? Prompting AI in a loop? This is what our jobs are turning into?

You've walked in my shoes, I quit a job with an idiotic non dev boss who vibe coded his rubbish to prod over and over and called me on the consequent incidents, I quit , he tried to rehire I said nope forget it.
I just managed fine holding the code together, but the speed and his bs commits breaking everything on a live prod app is more red flags than you can find in China.

You're totally right, agentic programming as of now work exactly and precisely as you described. Best video so far ever.

LLM companies just need to redefine the word 'slop' to mean something good.
They can tell their fans that it was always good; they'll buy anything.
