Folks really appreciate these videos, because we all made mistakes. I do hear in your voice that you are sad. You should be, it is naturalthese plants are so expensive. I bought a Hoya Latifolia Pot of Gold, a beautiful leaf cutting. Two days later, this morning, mush in the perlite. I was so upset, but that is the nature of the hobby. Hope it recovers and grows into a beautiful Swan.

I think the most overlooked part of this whole video was your intuition moment with the clear pot. Experienced growers don’t avoid plant loss — they learn to recognize when something feels “off” before the plant shows it above the substrate. The pristine leaves + collapsing roots is such a classic sign of the plant still running on stored energy while the root zone is already compromised.

Also makes me wonder if this is less about “too much water” and more about low oxygen + opportunistic pathogens after repot stress. An air stone could honestly be a game changer here. Really appreciate you showing the real side of rare plant growing instead of only the success stories.

If the rotting roots continue, the next time you chop them off and sterilise everything, allow the plant and roots to completely dry out before submerging it in water again. That’s what I did when this happened to me and I had success. Hopefully you won’t have to perform surgery again and this time is successful, but just in case 🤞

I know your plant is not dead, but my heart just breaks for you because the attachment that we have to a certain plant and then to find out that it’s struggling and then you try to take care of it and then it keeps on struggling. It’s just so frustrating and heartbreaking. I have been there trust me. I no longer buy expensive plans and if I do, I already have it in my mind that I’m going to lose it and if I don’t well then yay!

Hi Melissa! I tried to comment on your newest update video for Devil but it looks like comments are off ( or it’s just me not understanding how to leave one 😂). Maybe you’ll see it here. After watching I felt compelled to help if I can. I’ve been growing plants for a long time (30+ years😮) and one thing I know for sure is this. If the plant wants to survive it will. I’d recommend maybe just leaving it be in your current water prop set up for the foreseeable future. Keep changing the water but keep other interventions at a minimum. Plants are intelligent and will adapt ( if they want to). It seems your devil still wants to try living given the fact it perked up after the lasted transfer back to water. Maybe take that as a sign to just let be. If you get roots back consider adding some leca straight into the vessel it’s already in and keep doing that until it’s transitioned to leca fully. In terms of the root rot, if the plant seems happy on the surface then it might not be a huge deal, the plant might be self pruning its own roots ( think oak trees, they self prune branches that are not serving the whole organism). I know it’s hard to not intervene and try to fix. I get it, I’m also a nurse, Medsurg, wound care and psych. I also like to jump in and try to fix things but maybe since your at the end of your rope with this plant just take a step back and watch and wait ;) I hope this is helpful.. sending hugs and encouragement.. you got this ❤

Those new plants (cultivars?) are not tried and true yet for hundreds (?) of years like the Deliciousa is. In my mind it’s a gamble, but good on you for “following your dreams”. And thank you for inviting us in!!!!!! ❤

So sorry and that’s why I won’t buy an expensive plant (over $100). But if anyone can save a plant, it would be you. You are one of the best plant caretakers I’ve ever seen1

Thanks for addressing root rot and possibly saving a plant that you love. I recently had a hoya develop root rot and it died not knowing that was the problem. Tips help!!

Thank you! Very relatable!🩷

I’ve had Thai’s do this. Sometimes letting the roots sit out to dry for a while really helps. Hope it comes back for you!
