In my last d&d game our party almost got wiped out by 3 Phase Spiders. Their poison hurts but at least it doesn't kill you. The Echo Knight holed up in a corner, used dodge to put their attacks at disadvantage and slowly chipped away at them.

I'll never understand why Phase Spiders and Xill aren't treated like apocalyptic threats. They're parasites living in the walls of reality that can kill and eat you whenever they want. Forget Cthulhu, they're the real forbidden knowledge. Once you know they exist that's it, you'll never sleep again.

"Never eat the fresh bacon in a xill campe"

Almost as horrifying as when I learned where the wall meat came from in castlevania.

Recently ran a campaign arc in which intellect devourers are a common pest of the border ethereal, often unbound from any elder brain, invisibly stalking the intelligences they can detect from their side of the veil. As intelligent creatures, they plan.

In lore, they can half-jump into the ethereal when entering people's skulls to eat their brains, to avoid having to burrow through the bone, and are able to pilot the body after, stealing its knowledge and physical stats, all while psionically coordinating their efforts. This makes them awesome planar invader body snatchers all on their own.

I had cultists using blink dogs to sniff them out.

Wish I had remembered the Xill when designing encounters for the ethereal malignance they caused- it drew the attention of a lot of interested parties.

 Two questions:
1. Do they really just put an egg into a host and let them go? Are they not concerned the eggs could be harmed or the creature even finding a way to remove them?
2. Is there a reason they don't use Trolls? I mean, as long as it isn't burnt by fire or acid, a troll would regenerate near endlessly, so they'd make a perfect candidate for this kind of reproduction. A single troll could feed several generations of brood.
