Union Carbite was also responsible for the biggest industrial disaster in US history, the Hawk´s Nest Tunnel Disaster. To sum it up, they were tasked with drilling a hole through a mountain to divert a river to power a dam. While doing that they found out that the mountain was made up of industrial quality silica so they started to mine that too. Now there we have a loop hole. They classifierd it as a construction site, not a mining site. Those have different safety regulations. To safe on money and time they cast aside stuff like protective masks and water to wet the drills. Breathing in silica is not good for you, it is like breathing glass. Hundreds of workers got sick from this in the span of weeks from first starting to work there. The whole thing went pretty much unknown for a long time until a hobby journalist from New York heard about it and went to investigate.

My father received 3rd degree burns over 50% of his body and lost his eyesight in an industrial accident at Union Carbide. When he died of cancer 4 years later, Union Carbide said it was a heck of a coincidence.

Union Carbide was also responsible for the contamination of Homebush Bay in Sydney as a result of their production of AGENT ORANGE. The contamination extends through the Parramatta River and they were allowed to leave the site without a clean up agreement. When a nearby site was chosen for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the Rhodes penninsula (east side of Homebush Bay) has to be dug up and put through extreme temperatures to clean it up. This was on the taxpayer's dime. Greenpeace inspected the former site of the factory about found 36 unattended barrels of toxic waste. This factory was also the site of the invention of Gladwrap.

I've always held the opinion that not only are the managers and owners of Union Carbide guilty of crimes against humanity, but also the governments and law officials that failed to prosecute and punish them to the full extent of the law are also guilty to the same level.

My wife teaches at schools near the chemical plants in West Virginia. At least once a year, the alarms go off for a possible leak and the students are told to ‘shelter inside’. I hope the schools are airtight….
