Police Squad was a TV series that ran 6 episodes and was pretty much this to a tee. Worth a watch if you enjoy this kind of comedy.

Ricardo Montalban, who played Vincent Ludwig, was known for his role as Mr. Roarke on the TV series "Fantasy Island" for seven years. He would also have a good part in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", in which he played Khan.
