Rod Laver called Ashe's performance against Connors the greatest strategic match ever played at Wimbledon. Ashe gave Connors nothing to hit and controlled the whole match.

Arthur Ashe is a history- making man. No wonder there is a statue dedicated to him in his hometown of Richmond, Virginia.

I remember this match well, Connors was befuddled by the clever play of Ashe, lots of delicate shots, took the pace of the ball and gave Connor’s little to work with. A really well played match and a classy performer.

Ashe was the epitome of class. This match is legendary where he used clever tactics and psychology to beat the heavily favored Connors who was on fire and unbeatable at that time.
