This is a very interesting topic.
I think I can become obsessed with minor details. I really think it stems from my childhood. I was made fun of by my siblings over a couple features. One of which I did have fixed when I was 22.
I was never given positive affirmation from my parents, so when I got on my own if someone told me I was pretty I literally thought they were lying. I am 70 in a couple weeks and still will catch myself critical over things about myself that I would never notice on someone else.
Im this way also if a picture on the wall is just a tad off or if things are out of place.
It's hard for me to know where to draw the line.
I have been wanting my undereye bags taken care of and don't know if I am being reasonable or not. I have neverhad plastic surgery and I will never get a facelift, this I know for sure.
My husband loves me the way I am and thinks I am beautiful. He told me once he was going to break every mirror in the house...lol.
There are 4 of us who grew up in the same household and we all have these type of issues, sadly.

it really sucks being actually below average looking and having BDD because when the spell is lifted during specific periods, Im like “oh ok so im not ugly im just not pretty” whereas you see people with BDD on tiktok and reddit saying they have occasional moments when they see themselves with fresh eyes and cry or feel horrified because they realize theyre actually really disordered and theyre genuinely beautiful or normal. but for me its just a fluctuation of “I want 2 surgeries because Im not pretty and i cant compare to other women” to “I want 20 surgeries because I look like a man and no one will ever desire me or love me”

aren't the 'perceptual abnormalities' in BDD similar to those in some of the eating disorders?

What would you call it if a person really was actually ugly, and that person has confirmed that they are ugly by things/events they have experienced in public several times in their life? What if that person is a man (for instance) who is never looked at in public as being attractive enough for a female to date, etc? Would that still be considered as BDD? What if a patient feels so awful about himself (hair, body, etc.) for over 40 years that he wouldn't at all be comfortable with going through any type of "exposure therapy" in some kind of attempt to be "cured" of BDD? By the way, this is MY personal dilemma. I can't see myself being magically cured of this disorder unless I could take some kind of very strong medication that would make me so doped up that I would no longer care how I looked to anyone else. Other than that, I can't see myself ever getting "cured" of this disorder. Exposure therapy would not be an option to me as I would feel that it would be the equivalent of jumping off of a bridge or something equally nightmarish.
