But as he prepares to leap, Obi-Wan does something unexpected. His shoulders drop, his defensive stance relaxes, and his voice becomes soft—almost a whisper that somehow carries across the volcanic roar. Obi-Wan (softly, lowering saber): "Anakin... listen to me. You wanted to save Padmé, didn't you? That's why you turned…that's what he promised you." Anakin: ”He…did…” Obi-Wan: "But look at her, Anakin... look at what he made you do." Anakin's gaze follows Obi-Wan's gesture to where Padmé lies unconscious beside her ship, her breathing shallow, bruises darkening her throat where his fingers had been. The volcanic glass around them begins to crack in strange geometric patterns, responding to his shifting emotions. Obi-Wan: "You said you'd bring peace to the galaxy, that no one would suffer like your mother again. But the man who claims to give you power…he took everything from you. He made you her killer before you ever got the chance to save her." Anakin (anguished): "You don't understand! I had to! Padmé was going to die! The Jedi would have taken everything from me!" Obi-Wan (gentle but firm): "The Jedi didn't take your mother, Anakin. Fear did. The same fear that made you choke the woman you love. The same fear that's consuming you right now. Anakin (voice cracking): "No... I was saving her! The dreams…" Obi-Wan (stepping closer): "You think you've gained control, but Palpatine doesn't free slaves, Anakin…he makes them. And now you're his." Anakin (desperate): "He showed me the way! The power to save those I love! The dark side…" Obi-Wan (with growing conviction): "You were the Chosen One. Not to rule, but to end this cycle. And you still can. Right here. Right now." Anakin (the truth hitting him): "No... no, you're lying! He's my friend! He's been like a father to me!" Obi-Wan (completely vulnerable): "No Anakin, he’s not… He's terrified of you. And if he truly was a father to you… why did he deceive you all this time? Why did he keep you in the shadows, feeding you lies while calling it truth? How can he ask you to trust him, when he never trusted you?" Obi-Wan (gentle): "You still love her, don’t you? You love the child growing inside her. You haven’t lost that… and that means you’re not lost…not yet."" Around them, the volcanic chaos begins to respond differently…not to rage, but to the growing harmony between light and dark within Anakin. Anakin's lightsaber slips from his fingers, the blue blade extinguishing as it clatters across the platform. The Force ripples outward from Mustafar like a stone thrown into still water. Anakin (sobbing): "The younglings... the Temple... what have I done?" Obi-Wan: "It's not too late. It's never too late to come home." Anakin: "The things I've done... how can you even look at me?" Obi-Wan: "Because I see the nine-year-old boy who asked if he was going to be a Jedi. Because I see my brother…Let me help you prove him wrong." For a moment, hope fills the air like a living thing. Anakin reaches toward Obi-Wan's outstretched hand, and the Force itself seems to sing with possibility. But their moment of reconciliation shatters as the distinctive sound of Imperial engines fills the air. High above, a Lambda-class shuttle descends through the toxic atmosphere, its wings folding as it approaches. Anakin (terror replacing hope): "He's here. He's coming." The Emperor steps onto the volcanic platform with calculated grace, his dark robes billowing in the superheated wind. His yellow eyes scan the scene before him—expecting to find his new apprentice triumphant over a defeated Kenobi. Instead, he witnesses something that defies every carefully laid plan: Anakin kneeling beside Obi-Wan, both of them looking up at him not with submission, but with a unity that makes the air itself crackle with dangerous potential. Behind them, Padmé lies motionless near her ship, her chest rising and falling with shallow breaths. Though unconscious, she serves as an anchor to the physical world—the one stable point in a reality that's beginning to bend under the weight of conflicting Force energies. Palpatine (feigning grandfatherly concern): "My boy... what has happened here? You were to bring me Kenobi's lightsaber, not comfort him like a lost child." #starwars #starwarswhatif #whatif
