My story: Age 70, male. 15 months ago doctor put me on 10 mg Lisinopril to lower BP. My BP peaking at 200/110 the day before I went on medication. 6 months later dosage increased to 40 mg daily. I changed my lifestyle. 9 months ago I increased my exercise to 1.5 hrs daily, went on the Mediterranean diet, do 10 minutes of the breathing, take magnesium glycinate with tart cherry juice, beet juice in morning, hibiscus tea during the day, raw garlic daily, 2 weeks ago doctor took me off all medication. Said my BP was getting too low. I track my BP in morning and late afternoon daily. It now runs 123/74 in the morning when BP is highest. It runs 112/67 in late afternoon. Some of the changes are hard to do and I'll need to do it for rest of my life, but worth it to me. I also trust God for wisdom and healing.

I had high blood pressure in 2019 and couldn't walk for 5 minutes without the need for support. Listened to medical advice. Then changed my diet. I incorporated ginger, garlic spinach and beets in my diet. I also boycotted for life processed juices, sodas and then cut down on salt and sugar. From a high of 160s/90s BP plus palpitations to a normal bp level of 114/74 without meds for 4 plus years and still going strong. Today I walk for for kilometers and I am still okay. Trusting in God is also fundamental.

Many people taking blood pressure meds still die of heart related issues. I think changing your lifestyle is much more important then swallowing pills and hoping for the best.

I’m 61 and recently began to have problems with my blood pressure, with my readings being as high as 160/100 but averaging around 156/95. I historically don’t have a history of high blood pressure, but it does run in my family. Before putting me on medication, the doctor suggested that I try and make some lifestyle changes, which I was more than happy to do instead of taking pills.

I altered my diet…cut out the cakes and pastries, (which was hard as I’m a cake monster) pretty much stopped eating anything that came in a packet (processed food) and cut right down on my salt intake. Things I introduced - oatmeal for breakfast, with nuts, fruits, and ground flaxseeds, introduced salads, homemade vegetable based smoothies, and home cooked meals into my diet (I’ve not had any takeaway food now for two months). I also take a fish-oil capsule every day. Lastly, I got active, aiming for 7000 steps per day. It was difficult at first, but now 2 months later, I’m doing it with ease. My most recent BP readings are now averaging around 127/83. Still not optimal but for 2 months into my journey I’m happy - this is now my new lifestyle and I’m confident I’ll get it down further. This stuff works, you just have to be prepared to make the changes…..oh and as a bonus, I’ve lost a little bit of weight too.

Update to my comment: 1 month after I wrote this comment my average BP is now at 119/78 - I have my review in 3 weeks time, where the doctor was going to discuss putting me on BP medication. It could just be that I may be able to escape the pills for now……

At age 40, put on BP medication. age 51 had a TIA, Age 70 had a major stroke. Came home from hospital and decided I would not be a burden on my kids. Changed to mostly plant based meals, chick peas, nuts and all. Still eat a little chicken, fish, eggs, salmon. Drink normal milk and coffee. Have sushi or Chicken Teriyaki bowl as a treat once a fortnight. Grow 70% of my food. homemade granola with honey. Yearly visits to heart dr at the hospital and in 2023 said he did not want to see me till 2025. Before the stroke, I had ringing in the ears, heart palpitations, mouth ulcers, UTI's constantly. All gone now. Went for an eye test for my drivers license, at 75, and was told, no noticeable deterioration. no new glasses required. Spend most of the day outside, in sunshine, working in the garden. I did have "White coat syndrome" drs know. When they make me sit for 5 minutes, it only frustrates me and makes the BP worse. I take magnesium (1314gr) daily, at night. Take nitrate oxide, till its done, then CoQ10, till its done, then a b complex bottle till its done. Love beetroot, (Grow it) ps you can buy a beet dip now. Make garlic cabbage, or sauerkraut, pickled veges, kombucha. Make a morning shot of minced garlic, ginger, lemon juice, honey, cayenne pepper and warm water. still stuck on 1/2 tsp cayenne. BP is way more under control now. Although I am still trying to kick the sugar addiction. Feeling awesome. loved this information. Thank you.

This guy is so good because he doesn't have a horse in the diet race, but includes all diet kinds and honors their function. This allows good logic that gets to the roots of therapy regarding food. We'll done for for being pragmatic and objective!
Thank you for the clear unbiased advice.

I’m now 80. In my 60’s was still doing marathons. Had a quad bypass when 68. 4 years ago I had some minor swelling in my feet and was inactive eating lots of breads and pasta and potatoes. l Cleaned up my diet. Lost 40 lbs. and started walking. Now walk 5 miles/day 365 days/year (rain snow sun doesn’t matter). Went from 3 meds for BP to none.

I discovered something recently. if the batteries are getting weak on your blood pressure machine it can make your blood pressure read high. I just put fresh batteries in mine and it's reading 20mm/hg lower. you'll know when the batteries are getting weak when the pump starts sounding labored and the cuff doesn't inflate as fast as it used to.

So many things I could say about my BP, but one MAIN thing that everyone should be aware of that happened to me at the Dr.'s office, I knew my BP was around 130/85, I take garlic supplements and monitor it twice a day, In June for semi-annual check up nurses assist, first got a reading of my systolic being 164 (don't even remember diastolic), I told her I knew that was wrong, took it again and 155, still told her that wasn't right. When my Dr. came in she took my BP manually, which most Dr.'s are hesitant to do and got my normal reading of 132/84. NOW think of the person who doesn't have a BP machine at home and had normal BP, but got a much higher reading at the Dr. they would've been giving a script for meds they don't need at all !! Just imagine how many people are taking BP meds not needed !!
