  i love it when fashion vloggers explain the economic circumstances that impact fashion trends. it happens with music and movies too but most people don't notice it or talk about it.

  id say artists like sade and even Janet were more minimalist than aaliyah, as a huge aaliyah stan i remember aaliyah was very much dressing street but sweet in the 90s. she had occasional minimalist looks (1998 oscars) but i feel she didn't really tap into her paired back, sleek & chic, ''invisible/quiet luxury'' era until 2000 onwards. the photo you actually used was taken in 2001 and although the 90s didn't birth minimalism in fashion, there was a definite 90's minimalist look that fashion houses/designers created which was still very much prevalent and adorned by artists like aaliyah in 2000/2001.

  As a nicole kidman lover, her looks in the 90s were THE best and still is. And monica belucci. There was something sensual about this decade that I love, the simplicity in clothing and in makeup.

  Minimalism can look like it requires less effort but really requires more.I knows it just a basic top and jeans to anyone looking but the work that goes into getting the perfect basic top and making it work with a particular type of pant isn’t little

  My favorite 90's icone is Sade. Minimalism for me is not the bare minimum but owning less. Using or enjoying every piece that I own: I have no storage in my basement or attic or a 2nd closet (except empty moving boxes which I am not sure I should keep either!)

  What I find very interesting about the discourse around 'art' vs. 'aesthetics' in the context of minimalism is that Sade's music is, in essence, minimalistic as well and it couldn't be more beautiful, heartfelt, and original. If anything, the simplicity enhances the emotional depth, which kind of challenges the idea that minimalism is inherently detached or purely aesthetic. To me, it stands as one of the highest expressions of music as an art form.
