This was a running joke in Greece, people used to say things like "we will colonize Mars before Thessaloniki's metro is completed"

 Greece is a blessed country
everywhere we dig we uncover the amazing past dating back thousands of years
very few places in the world can boast museums with myriads of ancient artifacts in almost every subway station
the inconvenience of new construction delays and redesigning to work around these ancient treasures is soon forgotten when the project is completed

One of the metro lines in Rome took several decades to complete due to constantly running into artifacts.

It must be a nightmare to build anything of this sort of magnitude in Greece. You just never know what you'll find underneath.
But I'm surprised they ignored the archaeologists. Like that lady said, you want to build on Via Egnatia, a major Roman highway, and you don't think you'll find ancient artifacts underneath?
At least they finished it, even after decades.

13:03 as of the posting of this comment, the Kalamaria extension has already been opened and new trains were purchased to increase the fleet size to serve it

In every town in Greece if u have a piece of land and u want to build a house or whatever, u are terrified of what u might find underneath when the digging happens to lay the foundations. If anything found the delay may take years

There's nothing "unexpected" about finding ancient ruins in Greece.

I haven't used the Thessaloniki metro yet, but the town is an amazing amalgam of ancient and modern.

As for Metro projects that came across similar hurdles, the Athens metro is a good example. A lot of the stations double as mini museums exhibiting some of the finds unearthed during construction.
