But in the humid Southeast it will do less and an escape for the hot air being pushed out is necessary to create the stack effect.

Technically it would be better to use water as a medium. Much higher heat conductivity as well as heat mass density. In Houston it gets only about 70 degrees 50' down so even water won't do much for real cooling, water or air wise.

I've thought of doing this a number of times. But saving a quarter of a ton of cooling isn't enough. Maybe using it to heat a home in cold areas of the country makes more sense. Typically if it hasn't been adopted by builders .....there's a reason!!
