  I walked in without insurance and paid roughly $40 for the eye workup. I’m genuinely curious: what would something comparable cost where you live?<br><br>And yes… apparently I’m a glasses guy now. 🤓<br><br>Tell me your country + what you’d expect to pay.

  My eye doctor in the U.S. found a small hole in my retina, and the laser treatment was going to cost me almost $800. Since I was already planning a trip to China, I figured I’d just get it checked and treated there instead. I booked an appointment at an eye hospital in Wenzhou, which is actually one of the better-known eye hospitals in China, so I wasn’t worried about the quality of care.<br><br>The whole thing ended up costing me around $130 USD, including the exam and laser treatment, and I paid everything out of pocket. So I basically combined it with my China trip and got the same issue taken care of for a fraction of what it would have cost me in the U.S.

  I was in Shanghai China last year when I happened to visit a eye glass mall near the old railway station. I chatted with a store sales man about eye class, he told me that a nice glass frame plus the progress lens made by Zeiss was around $100-$150 with all the features, including the free check. And I could pick the glass within 45 minutes cause the Zeiss service center was in the same mall. I showed him my Japan made eye glass from costco @$300, he showed me the same quality glass, less than $70. He also mentioned that lots of Foreign visitors went the mall to buy eyeglass, usually buy 2-3 glasses together because of the quality and the prices.<br>The eye glass mall was great, the first two floor were cellphone repair market, where you can repair almost 80% of the cellphone problems at very low cost, like change broken USB port, change battery, fix the charging problems by change the chips etc.

  In China, all basic services and needs are very cheap because they are designed to be that way; the government ensures that all people can afford them. In contrast, in the US, these services are seen as the best way to make a profit because they are basic needs, and companies try to charge as much as possible.
