I think everyone should be allowed to join, but I agree you shouldn't attack ONLY popular artists ( especially because there are people with AWESOME ocs but no attacks, so i'd def try to attack those ! :D )

"You shouldn't be on Artfight because you're popular" is, in my honest opinion, a very middle school-ish & chronically online take. Pros and popular artists join Artfight to have fun and engage with the community, in many different ways. Taking away spaces because someone's more popular than another person and excluding them from community activities will inevitably further the normalization of exclusion based on factors we often times have either worked hard for, or had no control over. Growing your audience as an artist shouldn't be punished with exclusion from events like Artfight.

I agree with your point about misdirected resentment. I don't mind popular artists being on artfight. In fact, I think it's fun that there's so many art styles, skill levels and popularity levels. I also think there's no practical way to enforce "no large artists" -- like, what's the cut off? Does platform matter? What happens if someone gains a large following mid artfight? ^^"

As a small artist, I do have to say that I think responding to art should be a given even without a revenge because it does kind of suck to do a piece and not even know if it was seen 😭

Also thank you for the comment on my attack with Kitty and Lilly, lol I got jumpscared when I saw it

I think people need to realize they have a better chance at getting art back if they attack smaller accounts, like personally I get like 2-3 attacks a year in which I revenge every single one! It's also good to focus on revenging instead too if you want art, it makes more people willing to attack. Same with putting your account out there! Anyways have fun with it, it's just a silly game after all.

Honestly as someone who's participated in AF since 2017 the amount of negativity and straight-up vitriol that's spawned out of seemingly no-where has seriously soured the experience. All this "you shouldn't join if you're popular" and complaining about receiving "bad attacks" or whatever, these things are such non-issues i don't understand why anyone cares??? At the end of the day it's an art gifting game created to draw and share art of our OCs. It's never been serious enough to warrant so much hostility and hatred. Makes it hard to want to continue participating at all.

In conclusion; all this drama is unwarranted and depressing. Anyone is allowed to join artfight regardless of skill or numbers and this should never have been a discussion to begin with :/

The thing with Art Fight is you have to go in with very low expectations if you’re going to have any fun. I’m on my 5th attack and I’ve only had 2 defenses so far. Those two defenses are so incredibly beautiful and kind and I am so grateful for anything anyone has ever done for me. I love them so much and when I go into Art Fight I try to avoid expecting a certain number of defenses because it makes me love the few I get so much more.

I personally "follow" big artists/artists I follow on social media sites but have no intentions of making art for them (or at least not at the expectation of getting revenge attacks). I like seeing their art and posing, but like drawing others' characters that don't get art often like those that haven't developed their character yet or it's their first year.

Artfight "runs" on a gift economy - art is given, thanks is given back, integrity is honored, which makes it clash with social media engagement, which is mostly parasocial in nature and tends to separate out into creator/fan roles. The ways in which they scale up and thrive are different because the connections they accommodate are different, too. For the fanbases that come into AF prepared to target their favorite creator, this makes it an exotic destination, and they might be curious or enjoy some parts but aren't necessarily there to "talk to the natives" like the people who hang out in the Discord and play the minigames all year. And vice versa if this is taken as a PR activity by the creator and their engagement in AF is overly calculated.

But that's not a thing to gripe about, overall, because it doesn't spoil the event for the hardcore audiences who have been coming back to it year after year and trying to explore every corner of the game. There are a lot of excellent artists, people who have some commercial or industry presence even, who don't participate in social media, or only in an incidental way. The event works well for them because they don't look at the stats so closely trying to rank themselves or maximize attention. Everyone who talks about "large" and "small" artists is looking at the stats closely, definitionally, and therefore sees a situation and a drama within it. But everyone who wants to play Artfight without that influence has the option of quietly making an alt account, or multiple, and keeping to themselves.

This isn't even a new phenomenon to art, really, although it might be the first time for a lot of digital artists. There are many instances of someone famous hiding that fact when submitting a piece to some showcase or competition. They don't want to feel like their eminence is guaranteed if they sneeze on a napkin.

I don't mind popular artists being on artfight because like everyone should be allowed, that being said, I personally avoid attacking massive artists because I feel like I'd be in a sea of like 100+ attacks if that makes sense

I will say as someone who's socially anxious and does take Artfight as a chance to do fanart, It's really nice as a smaller artist being able to give to larger artists who have been inspirations to me for a long time (and or I literally follow them cause I enjoy their ocs). I get the sentiment of the uneven amount of art larger artists get, but I think it both others larger artists and ignores that people are doing this because they want to, which is the core of the event. It generalizes bigger artists like they’re drowning in fanart and are greedy for participating and just because they have grown their platform they now no longer get to participate with their own community?? Like there would be no way for moderation to enforce the nuances of the situation, so It just puts all the blame on big artists without trying to do the work to actually find a way to better uplift smaller ones.
