Reggie intentionally increased the difficulty by starting with the super valuable ring. Since the game uses the value of your colony, including all of your items, to calculate raid strength and that ring costs more than a late game colony, he was facing late-game threats from day one with early game defenses and technology (albeit with a larger population as the high value attracts more immigrants).

15:15 - So the extremely short version of why The Dark Ages are considered a dark period is that Rome got wiped off the map, meaning the main people keeping records on anything suddenly stopped writing history books. "Dark" was originally used in the sense that there was so little recorded information surrounding the era.

The game ends when all gnomes die or your computer crashes as there is no preset victory condition. It is just survive for as long as you can type of game.
