Personally, my intuition comes from thinking in terms of counting and the rate of counting. If you view multiplication as repeated addition, 5x is literally x additions of 5. Derivatives then become a way to count how many of those addition operations are triggered for every step you take. Therefore x*2 is simply 2 additions of x
