  $599 is insane to this day. Adjusted for inflation that’s $955 in 2025. PS5 launched at $499 in 2020 and Nintendo got shit on for launching Switch 2 at $449.

  I think I remember around that time there was a conspiracy theory that despite them seemingly doing better on the surface, Sony put in Blu Ray tech into the PS3 as a Hail Mary attempt to defeat the competing movie format, HD DVD. There was also another one that suggested that Toshiba was bribed by Sony to drop out of the format war and they took their deal. Those were just two random things I remembered way back when that were more he said she said type of things and I don’t think really have much validity to them but was still fun to go down memory lane.

  The thing about BluRay is, unlike CDs and DVDs which Sony made sure their PlayStation were compatible with to make them versatile entertainment devices, BluRay they had a vested interest in because it was <b>their own media format</b>

  2009 to 2012 were a massive turning point for PlayStation 3 console, especially with the release of PS3 SLIM &amp; SUPER SLIM &amp; TONS of amazing games like GRAN TURISMO 5, UNCHARTED 2 &amp; 3 &amp; RATCHET AND CLANK FUTURE A CRACK IN TIME.

  Blu-ray also helped maintain single disk games, at the same time x360 sometimes had up to 4 disk games

  Microsoft having little marketplace presence in Japan helped with the global sales too. In markets now where today ps4 and ps5 dominate, at the time the 360 was the preferred system for a lot of people
