Why Don't We Eat Pine Marten ?

Can you eat pine marten? Legally, it depends where you live, and almost nobody does. In this video, you'll learn: What a pine marten really is, and how it differs from the American marten Why a small forest predator is a poor choice for dinner What the CDC says about Trichinella and meat from wild carnivores Whether scent glands really ruin the flavor Why pine martens are legally protected in Britain and Ireland Why marten fur mattered more than marten meat How pine martens are staging a real conservation comeback Stay to the end for the surprising food-chain rule behind it all. Press play, and let's find out why. Why don't we eat pine marten? It sounds simple, but the answer blends biology, food safety, law, and history. The European pine marten (Martes martes) and the American marten (Martes americana) are agile, tree-climbing members of the weasel family. Wildlife agencies describe them as carnivorous furbearers that mostly hunt voles and squirrels, and eat carrion when they find it. A male American marten weighs only about 1 to 3 pounds, so there is very little meat to begin with. We also cover the wild game safety angle: why the CDC says meat from wild carnivores must be cooked thoroughly, why freezing may not protect you from some Trichinella species, and what marten scent glands actually do. You'll see why pine martens are protected across Britain and Ireland, how groups like the Vincent Wildlife Trust track their recovery, and why fur trapping, not the dinner table, shaped how people used martens. Along the way, we look at how these small predators help forests and even native red squirrels.
