Why Don't People Eat Cougar Meat?

Mountain lions live across much of the American West, and hunters do eat them. So why is cougar meat almost never on a menu, a store shelf, or your dinner plate? In this video, you'll learn the real reasons, and they're not what most people assume. You'll find out what cougar meat actually tastes like, according to wildlife biologists and hunters. You'll learn why freeze-resistant parasites make "just freeze it" a risky plan. You'll discover why the ecology of apex predators makes them a poor food source. You'll see where the law bans cougar meat entirely, and where hunters must legally keep it. You'll hear why eating a predator feels so different from eating a deer. By the end, you'll know whether cougar meat is dangerous, delicious, or just misunderstood. Stay to the end for the one cooking rule that matters most. Then we zoom out to ecology. Raymond Lindeman's 1942 research on energy transfer helps explain why apex predators like the cougar are naturally rare, hard to find, and impractical as a food source. We also cover the legal side: California's Proposition 117 bans possessing or selling mountain lion parts, while Colorado requires hunters to prepare the edible meat for human consumption. Finally, we hear what biologists and hunters say the meat tastes like, and why the stigma exists. If you enjoy wild game facts, animal science, and food history, subscribe for more.
