The Japanese were notorious for having poor damage control procedures. Only dedicated damage control teams were given training. In the US Navy, all crewmen were given damage control training. This made a huge difference on numerous occasions.

Japanese damage control doctrine lacked severely behind that of the United States.
The United States made a study of it and implemented fleet-wide training on damage control. Discoveries of better fire control procedures and if deficiencies in procedures were found were disseminated fleet wide. Ideas learned on one ship could be spread to every other ship.
Each Japanese ship instead designed its own damage control procedures. And anything it found out was kept to itself pretty much. The Americans had experts look over what should and should not be done and carefully planned it out. Each Japanese ship's damage control doctrine varied in its degree of effectiveness depending on how well the ship designed its on individual procedures. They were much more amateurist in general than the American ones. This contributed to a great degree too many ships losses due to poor damage control.

You would think the Death Star designers would have paid attention to the Taiho.

To me, Taiho is the manifestation of Japan's real problem during the war. They might be able to build new equipment, but they just don't have the experienced personnel to operate it.

This is what happened to USS Lexington CV-2 during Coral Sea. Lexington survived the Coral Sea battle but fuel vapors ignited by a spark or some other source doomed the ship on its way back to Pearl Harbor. If I remember correctly she sank 3 or 4 hundred miles from the Coral Sea battle.

Taiho was probably Japan's best all-around carrier design. Not the biggest, or the fastest-but the best overall. Unfortunately for the Japanese, she came along too late in the war and her crew were not sufficiently trained in damage control. Japanese carrier design had also been impacted by the losses at Midway-Taiho had great deck armor to defend against air attack by US dive bombers, but her defensive capability against submarine attack was insufficient. Perhaps more shielding Destroyers should have been used? Maybe Taiho should have employed more reconnaissance aircraft to keep US submarines away? Thoughts?
