Most major wars that the United States have been involved in, we got involved in because someone touched the boats.

The Japanese touched our boats in 1941, and we invented portable stars to pay them back.

One of the original Six American Naval Frigates is still in service with the US Navy today. USS Constitution is also a museum ship as well.

The WW2 ship USS O'Bannon stumbled to close to a Japanese sub that was not submerged at night, and the subs crew on the surface were sleeping and didn't notice the USS O'Bannon until it was so close that it woke them up. At this point both ships were too close to each other to fire torpedoes or heavy guns without harming themselves. Neither crew had firearms on the deck, but the sub had a small 3 inch deck gun that could be used without harming the sub so the Japanese navy men started towards it to open fire at which time the crew on the USS O'Bannon started throwing Potatoes at the sub as it was the only thing nearby. The Japanese thought they were hand grenades, so they tried throwing the potatoes back at the USS O'Bannon giving the O'Bannon enough time to get some distance away from the sub to sink it with its heavy guns. Funny story.

The famous British Admiral Horatio Nelson that won and died at the battle of Trafalgar against the Spanish Armada has a quote about after hearing of the burning of the USS Philadelphia. British Admiral Horatio Nelson, upon hearing of Stephen Decatur's daring raid to burn the captured USS Philadelphia in Tripoli Harbor (1804), reportedly called it "the most bold and daring act of the age," making Decatur an instant hero and the youngest captain in U.S. Navy history at age 25.

the uss obannon story isnt really long enough to make a whole vid about.  The story goes something like this: The O'bannon was on patrol in the solomon islands sometime in 1943.  One particularly dark night on patrol, the ships galley staff were on deck peeling potatoes because its the south pacific and its hot AF below deck.  In the darkness, the obannon came across a japanese sub running on the surface, with neither side realizing the other was there until they were right next to eachother.  Battlestations gets sounded, men run to man the guns, but the sub is too close, the guns cant depress low enough to shoot the sub, meanwhile the japanese are making ready their deck gun which absolutely can shoot the americans.  Unable to contribute to the battle otherwise, the cooks that had been peeling potatoes started yeeting them at the japanese, but remember its dark AF out so the japanese think the americans are throwing grenades.  The japanese gunners spent the next few moments running around kicking "grenades" overboard before they can explode instead of manning the deck gun and shooting at the americans, which gives the obannon enough time to open the range so that the guns can actually get on target and they promptly blow the japanese sub to smithereens.

There are numerous places named Decatur in the U.S., with at least 15 cities, towns, or villages, plus several unincorporated areas, and five Decatur Counties, spread across states like Illinois, Georgia, Alabama, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New York, Texas, and more, all honoring U.S. Naval hero Stephen Decatur, though the exact count varies by source and inclusion criteria.

A minor point in the story but this is also the reason why the US Navy has always had a ship named Enterprise.  (In fact the newest is under construction  a Ford Class Carrier)
