Why The Godfather Part 3 Is A Disappointment

    Give Pacino a normal haircut, hire an actual actress to play mary and give Duvall money. That was all the film needed.

    In my opinion, cutting out Michael's death was a huge mistake. It takes away from the symbolism. Michael's death is supposed to mirror Vito's death while also serving as a stark contrast. That's the whole point of Michael holding an orange. Like Vito, Michael survived getting shot and went on to retire and live out the rest of his days in peace. But whereas Vito died surrounded by his family and spent his final moments bonding with his grandson, Michael was isolated, alone, and depressed.

    I also think an underrated reason why the movie flopped is simply because it was made in the 90s. The grittyness of movies in the 70s and the sound design really helped this genre.

    Even Al Pacino was upset. He wanted Michael to remain remorseless and ruthless to the end.

    At the end of Part II, Michael Corleone is a soulless, reptilian zombie of a man. At the beginning of Part III, he is making jokes, writing friendly letters to his wife, being charming and loving to his family and friends. It doesn't jibe at all. He's become a completely different character in between the two films.

    The short answer is that they waited too long.

    The issue I had… Was a big one… Michael wasn’t Michael… Michael in the first two was dark and brooding…. And this one he was everyone’s amiable fun uncle. Yes yes, I know people change over the years, but it was too much.

    I think the main problem is that Pacino is allready a caricature of himself by the time this came out.

    I don't give Al a pass. By then, Pacino had already transformed into his 1990s "Hoo-ah/Great Ass" persona. Long gone was the cool, measured, and suddenly explosive Pacino of the '70s and '80s. Wrong voice, wrong hair, wrong mannerisms. He never truly embodied Michael Corleone again—he left that to Andy Garcia. You didn't really see that style of acting from him again until Carlito's Way.

    The helicopter assassination scene was also ridiculous

    Al Pacino forgot how to act like Michael Corleone.

    The reasons Godfather 3 wasn't up to snuff are these;

#1) Pacino wasn't playing Michael Corleone he was playing old Al Pacino. With all the overacting that we see in his later films like Scent of a Woman, Glengary Glenross, Devil's Advocate, Two for the Money, etc.

#2) Mediocre screenplay.

#3) No Robert Duvall

#4) Sophia Coppola's lousy acting.
