"Keep shooting him until he stops doing whatever it was he was doing that made you start shooting him in the first place."<br><br>I've been saying that, in exactly those words, for at least 30 years, and probably longer. I dont know for certain, but I suspect the quote is from Clint Smith, and if its not, it sure sounds like him. <br><br>Edit: Seems the quote is widely attributed to P. J. O'Rourke, who wrote for National Lampoon in the '70 's, and authored several books.

Handgun bullets are best described as "persuaders."

It's so funny when they talk about just shooting them in the leg, it's like do you understand if you shoot them in the leg you shatter the femur or any of the other bones for that matter, the person is at really high risk of bloodborne infection, going into instant shock, having the chance of fragments of the bone severing several arteries in the leg and upper thigh, it is not a good place to get shot. It's like yeah, the person might not die there at the scene, but they might die days to weeks later from complications caused from said gunshot to the leg.

15 hits with 45 is a good study in the use of peripheral hits. Speed is fine, but accuracy is final. My brother, paramedic in Portland told me who he transports and who goes to the morgue. If morgue hits help to indicate high percentage stop, then peripheral hits are low percentage for actually stopping a motivated threat.

With body armor becoming more prevalent, I would think that the pelvis shot would be a viable consideration.

Personal example of a .22 pistol zero-shot stop; I was walking through a small Nevada town after dark when a feral dog pack surrounded me and charged. I pulled my pistol and was in the process of shooting when the entire pack turned tail and fled. <br><br>Luck--it was luck. I was carrying my .22 because I had no ammunition for my .45. I'm glad that I didn't shoot any dogs, but even happier that I wasn't bit.

As far as the pelvic girdle goes, i was trained to use that as a 2nd target in the failure to stop drill. The reasoning being that it's both a larger target than the brain case and far less likely to be armored. Add that we're using rifles, it'd be much more destructive to the pelvis it makes more sense. In all cases center mass is the preferred target and we practiced head shots as well

One force-on-force training scar is that the trainees practice giving up and dying when hit. Doesn't matter if it's a laser beam that hits a sensor, an air soft plastic pellet, a paintball or a Simunition. The umpires running the show scream YOU DIED--GET ON THE FLOOR! <br><br>Is that really what trainers want their students to do in the real world--lay down and die when injured? What is the goal? Let the criminal win?

A "stop" is not always forever--felon after felon fall down after being shot and may even lose consciousness but recover enough to resume hostilities. Or they're shamming.
