  Most people today don't realize the lady translating "Jive" is Barbara Billingsly who played the mother figure on the very traditional classic TV show called "Leave it To Beaver".  Which was known to have very stylized 1950's and 60's nuclear family friendly programming.  The casting was a purposeful choice, several of the actors were chosen because of their past roles, and playing a role opposite has a shock value.  Today Leslie Neilson is known for his comedy, but I believe this was his first comedic role, and same for the Pilot.

  This movie is even funnier when you start looking up or hearing about all the references that are technically outdated. Mom Cleaver as the &apos;I speak Jive&apos; woman and the parody of Point/Counterpoint from 60 minutes are among my favorites. The Singing Nun reference and Ethel Merman are pretty good, too. &nbsp;If no one has mentioned it the airport announcers arguing at the beginning were real LA announcers and married in real life.

  It’s amazing how Airplane! totally transformed comedy by doing things differently from typical parodies. Instead of using comedians to improvise or adding easy-to-outdate pop culture jokes, they actually took a serious 1950s disaster script, cast serious actors, and asked them to play it completely straight. This unique approach really changed the game.<br><br>The &quot;no acknowledgment&quot; rule is pure genius. There is no winking at the camera, no pausing for laughs. By treating absolute absurdity with deadpan sincerity, they created something timeless that still holds up 40 years later. Modern comedies could really learn a lot from this pacing and structure.

  Your reaction to the &quot;I take it black, like my men&quot; joke was the stuff of legend, and if you had been drinking instead of eating, it might have been even more epic. LOL
