Time to change the narrative from, "why aren't young people having kids?" to, "how did old people fail to set future generations up for success?"

They cut our legs off, pin us down, and then have the audacity to ask why we aren't running

Children have been viewed as economic assets in the past. They increased productivity on the farm and provided some sense of security for the parents in their old age. But now they are viewed as liabilities.

We don't want a life of luxury, even having a decent house and an average paying job looks like an impossible dream.

I couldn't imagine having kids in my 20's, I really can't imagine what I would've done now as I approach 50. I can barely take care of myself.

In agricultural society children are economic output. In current day children are economic sink. My parents told us don’t have kids unless I can provide for them the same I was provided for. My parents saw my brother and I as failure as we did not go to medical school.

It's not just less economic power people have but also less time, plus the pressure of a couple having to both work in order to earn enough alone without having to bring another life into suffering this world that is actively being destroyed.

I was 32 when I got laid off. Just starting my career in software. Made a late pivot. Got laid off. Can't land a job for two years. Turned 35 recently. Hardly any women will date me. I gave up. Went back to school I'm hoping and praying I land a job after so I can get married and start a family

Nah, sorry. Not having them. Your kids will have to deal with the mess we've made. Mine will sit feeling nothing in the void of non-existence.

Yes but no matter how much love we give to our kids, they'll have to grow up and go through this meat grinder of a society and sacrifice their time and effort doing stuff they don't care about? It's not their responsibility. Neither did they ask for it.

Living in squalor and having four kids is totally irresponsible, so I wouldn't hold that up as a model, by any stretch of the imagination.

If you're a poor family in a wasteland with lots of kids, those kids are able to help around with the labor and the tribe.

In contrast, if you're a poor family in a 1st world country, those kids are just economically expensive. They often don't have a tribe to rely on.

The poor family in the wasteland gets to see their kids and their tribe very often.

The poor family in the 1st world country might be working multiple jobs and rarely get to spend much time and energy to even be with their kids. They might spend money to put their kids in daycares.

There is the saying "It takes a village to raise a child."

Instead of "I can't afford a child" or "I think the future is bleak"... what about: "What's the point of raising a child that I rarely get to see and be with in my life because I work multiple jobs to support the family?" Because that rather... takes away the fulfillment part of being a parent if you rarely get to be with the cause of fulfillment.

Also, contraception has been quite effective.
