Not really part of the cosplay community, but throwing together a cosplay from pieces that you own and still making the character recognisable despite not looking exactly like their official design strikes me as much more creative than simply buying all the missing pieces. It makes your interpretation of the character more unique in my opinion.

Like most hobbies, cosplaying has fallen victim to consumerism, where people expect you to buy everything, when instead it should be about exploring the character and having fun. I love following different cosplayers precisely because their cosplays bring out different aspects about the characters :)

I remember I did a SUPER subtle cosplay of a character. No one knew who I was, and didn’t expect them to, but the voice actor was like “I love your casual [character] cosplay!” and it made my month

It's sad how little closet cosplays I've seen in the past few years!!! ugh we're losing the plot we need to bring it back

I think what annoys me the most and what i’ve seen often is people going to comment under someone’s post "this cosplay isnt accurate" or "this isnt how the character looks like"and those very same ppl saying that know NOTHING about cosplay. I remember seeing someone saying to a jinx cosplayer under a post that they "had the wrong body to cosplay". Its insanely rude and just insane how far ppl will go to spread their bigotory. And according them "thé point of cosplay is to be accurate to The character you’re cosplaying" obviously that’s not true but some ppl are in deep. 😭

I almost exclusively closet cosplay. I don't have the funds to buy entire cosplays, and don't have the time or skills to make complex pieces. Thankfully, my personal style and the style of the characters I really want to cosplay are almost the same. I do NOT give af if it's 100% accurate. People need to chill tf out 😭

I feel like people have forgotten the definition of "hobby". There's no "need" in hobby, it's for fun. Wanna throw together a costume with a vaguely matching tshirt colour and cardboard hat? Great, have fun! Wanna spend a whole year handcrafting every detail? Great, have fun!
(Also weird idea of "we have to stay home to be safe, but let's make sure other people are working 16 hrs in sweatshops". I can understand needing to pay rent, but how many people are actually paying rent with tiktok?)

closet cosplays and AUs were HUUUUUUGE in the hetalia and homestuck fandoms back in the day because so many of the costumes were difficult to make/wear (military uniforms, full body paint, etc) and there were so many broke teenagers with no way to buy costumes or sometimes even supplies to make them well.

i feel like that made things REALLY creative though, especially with how it paired with existing AUs! you could just be “humanstuck” karkat with no paint or horns and nobody would bat an eye, or people would even do tiny smears of gray to look like a troll cosplaying as a human. for hetalia, there were so many popular alternate outfits that you could get recognized in a hoodie and jeans just as easily as the canon outfit.

both of those fandoms may have their notoriously bad moments in fandom history, but the relationship with cosplay is one i look back on fondly

themed dinner parties is a HUGE part of the Swedish student life. it's so fun seeing a hundred people basically closet cosplay different childhood cartoon characters or famous people or whatever. it really brings out people's creativity

Closet cosplay is always much better and more meaningful than someone spending money to buy one ready to wear and putting no further effort into it

I closet cosplayed a lot during the pandemic as well. Once I started going to cons again I focused more on making more accurate cosplays. I recently ordered a Stocking Anarchy cosplay for my next con but the outfit won't arrive in time so I am deciding to closet cosplay for it instead as the wig already arrived. It has been so fun to play around with different pieces and makeup again! I'm really hoping closet cosplay will come back, It's such a fun and creative way to express your fav characters with an added personal touch :D
