Do You Have WHAT IT TAKES TO WIN a Cosplay Craftsmanship Contest??

Totally agree on the age based system thing. My fave contest has a youth category where the contestants don’t have to make their costumes. So you have 15 y/os with fully sewn cosplays up against five year olds dressed up by their parents in a party city costume. Hurts to see younger competitors who care about their craft competing against cute babies that sway the judges/audience.

I'm literally wearing 2013 Snow Miku while watching this. I have a cosplay contest in a little over a week and I'm cos-testing, hyping myself up, and rehearsing my walk on. I haven't competed in years so 'excited' doesn't even begin to cover how I feel right now when I look at myself in the mirror

your channel is so underrated for how much you help people 😭 something ive noticed is that going into comps without the intention of winning (you do NOT have to go in like this) helps me stay calm when i dont get an award :) ive entered around 2 for the experience alone

its actually super similar to acting, and how you shouldn't expect to get a lead role the first time you're in a film lol

When I was younger in my first real cosplay I went to the local con and entered the contest. I had NO IDEA what I was getting into, everyone was incredibly kind and I was so embarrassed I refused to pose for the judges in prejudging haha but I never for a second felt unwelcome. All my love to that convention which closed down just recently.

I am OBSESSED with the amount of research you did on fancons to display to viewers. As someone who frequents fancons for fun and from an analytical POV I am always interested in seeing other people take this analytical approach to the convention & cosplay world :D !! By doing this kind of research we can take statistical approach to explaining the hobby/community to others, because it differs DRASTICALLY by region. I find advice/information from one source does not always help someone coming from a different background & region ♡ instant subscribe from me

Thank you so much for the mention on the MegaCon system of experience classes! Our team runs the cosplay offerings at the MegaCon events for the Dublin, London, Birmingham, and Manchester shows and we've put a lot of thought into how to make competitions more equitable and accessible for as many cosplayers as possible! We're continuously trying to continue making competitions more accessible. One of the other things we are very proud of is our commitment to building a resource of competition information via our blog.

This whole video is a wonderful analysis of cosplay contests, the amount of research you've done is really impressive! 9:40

Thank you for making this video <3 I'm getting discouraged by my first ever handmade cosplay (Midna from Twinklight Princess) and this just makes it feel so much more doable. I don't think I will compete in this cosplay, but it's my first step. I love your over-analyzation!

Congrats on 2K+ subs! It's really nice to see someone discuss cosplay contests more in-depth and with so much passion for it! It really is a tiny niche within the world of cosplay, but that's part of the charm with it.
Where I'm from we mostly do Novice/Intermediete/Master, or craftmanship/performance. So I haven't really experienced needlework/foamwork/etc categories yet. Alwasys interesting to hear how cons and comps differ around the world and I hope to get out and experience more of them in the future.

My plans for the year is to finish my FFXIV character and ARR Thancred, and start on Clive from FFXVI

I have no words for HOW MUCH I HATE AGE DIVISIONS !!!
As a young cosplayer with older friends it’s so disappointing when we hype ourselves to do a contest together but then it’s an age division.
I’m spending all of my time and energy into being as good as my older cosplayer friends, and when i try to enter contest i really don’t feel welcome. I’ll never understand why a costume seem to have less value on a 16 years old than on a 20 years old.
Young cosplayer who like to make their costume juste like older cosplayer do are already so isolated in the cosplay competition community and age division are really not helping :(

I very much appreciate the work you have put into collating all this information and seeing more people within the community taking a critical look at competitions and their structure. Having been a former Cosplay Coordinator for Dublin Comic Con this video is one I've been wanting to watch for a while and glad to have now that I've the time.
